There is nothing- that has a more deleter ious effect upon the cardiac or heart nerves than the excessive use of tobacco. Pain and tenderness around the heart, an oppressive feeling in the chest, choking sensation in the throat, discomfort from sleeping on the left side and smothering spells at night when the sufferer has to sit up in bed to breathe are the most common symptoms of a weak heart. Smokers who ieel these symptoms and who do not understand their meaning should be warned in time, by the following experience: "I was greatly troubled with an affection of the heart, due I think to excessive smoking. On writing to you for advice I was directed to begin a course of treatment which in cluded Dr. Miles' Heart Cure, Dr. Miles' Nervine and Nerve and Liver Pills, together with bathing; etc. I faithfully followed the directions given znd am pleased to say that my cure is complete and permanent. Be fore beginning the use of your remedies I was so nervous I could not keep my hands still and suffered greatly from severe pains around the heart. Many times at night I would be forced to assume a sitting posture to get my breath, and for the time being it would seem as though my heart had stopped beating. From the splendid results achieved in my case I can cheerfully recommend Dr. Miles' Heart Cure, Restorative Nervine and other remedies to all sufferers from heart or nervous troubles." Now, as we see it, the action of those lawyers was aimed at Judge Peebles as an individual and not at the court as a judicial institution. And so if the case must come into the court, why some judge other than Judge Peebles ought to try it." tut The Richmond Times-Dispatch certainly has some enterprising corres pondents. The story of the hogs hunting rabbits was given some time ago, last week Another Virginia Freak. bury about comes the tollowing calf story from Roxbury : "A strange freak of nature exists in this county. Mrs. Martha Clem men ts, who lives in the upper end of the county, owns a calf nine weeks old, which was born with its heart on the outside of its body. The pulsa tions of this vital organ -were as regular as if it had been in its accustomed place. Mrs. Clemments says she was so worried about the little beauty tbat she could not rest at nigbt for thinking of the strange affliction. Sne only wished the calf would die, but it did not ; but continued to grow and be frisky. Finally, she consulted a veterinary, who agreed to put the heart where it naturally belonged, or try to do so. 'Go ahead,' said the lady ; 'if it dies it's all right.' Saturday the operation was successfully performed, and now the calf seems all right, and is as playful as a kitten. 'I will never sell it,' said Mrs. Clemments. The calf is a beautiful, full-blooded Holstein. It i? not bolieved there is another case on record of the same nature." J t t I The Virginia Legislature has made it possible for street car companies to require negroes to ride separate from the whites. Great pressure is Streeet Car Trouble in Bichmoud. passionately as they could, and have agreed among themselves not to ride on the streot cars set aside for them, but to walk. The Richmond News Leader concludes editorial discussion of the matter as follows : "The antagonism and prejudice between the two races will continue. It will develop in our public couveyances and in all the walks and acts of life. The best thing and only thing for the negro to do is to submit and. make the best of it with good nature and patience, for he is in the presence of a race which he cannot fight or overcome, at the mercy of a force so far su perior to his own that be cannot deal with it by process of law, by the In fluence of moral or political force, by intellectual effort or by revolution. In this special case, no injustice is done him. The place assigned him in the cars is as good as that given the whiles. AH he is asked to do is to keep to himself and allow the white people to do the same, so that inti mate contact between the races shall be avoided as far as possible. The wise course for the colored people is to accept developments as they come, but to keep in their minds that the only hope for the peace and comfort of both races is tbat they shall be separated finally, not by the distance be tween one seat in a street car and another, but by miles of territory or ocean, . so tbat the negro may establish a civilization and government of his own and a country in which be shall stand on his merits and be equal with all the other people there." tut Some time ago when the press of the country was giving much broad cast advice to farmers about the cotton crop of this year, The Common- Two Bales Instead of One WEALTH sasge8ted that the wi868t tixing tor tne farmers to do would be to make the acreage of last year produce a million bales more this year. The Wilmington Mes senger is even more intensive than that, as will be seen in the following paragraph : "There is a good deal of talk at this time about the increase of acreage to be planted in cotton. Of course, It would be a great thing for the South ern planters if they could intensify their farming so as to produce two bolls where one was heretofore grown. There would be where the farmer would grow rich. We canpot look for any such thing as this, but we expect to see the production per acre increased in the crop of the coming year. The high price of cotton and the scarcity of labor will cause this. Excepting the cost of fertilizing, it costs no more to raise two bales of cotton to the acre than it does to produce half a bale per acre. The demand for cotton is increasing so rapidly that there need be no fear of a return to the low prices for the staple of a few years ago. The farmers of tne South need not be afraid of over-production. If the reports show an increase in acre age, there will be made an effort by the bears in the speculative market to -reduce the price, and they may be successful for a while. But all the farmer has to do to get a good price for his cotton is to hold on to 't until the scare about increased acreage has blown over. The supply is so short now that it will take a large crop this year to come up to the demand of consumers. A twelve million bale crop will not be a bit more than the factories of the world will require to supply the demand. Twelve million bales of cotton put on the market in 1904-'05 should bring more per pound than did a nine million or ten million bale crop a few years ago. To make mpney good money on cotton this year ail a farmer has to do is to select good seed, fertilize his land and make it produce two bolls where it produced only one last year." . G. E. Kepple. A Serious Wreck. Wilmington Messenger. Th3 wreck which occurred on the Coast Line at Lucama on Monday night a few minutes before 12 o'clock, was one of the most serious tbat has occurred on the Coast Line in a long time. It was indeed fortunate that no one lost their life in the accident. The train wrecked was No. 35, the Florida and West Indian Limited, and the wreck was due to carelessness on the part of the crew on the freight cars standing on the main line. It is said that Conductor Burnett, of No. 8, the freight, admits that be forgot ail about the passenger train. The vestibule ap proacbed Lucama at the rate of about forty-five miles per hour, and Engineer Wacksmith saw the cars too late to re duce the speed of his train to any ma terial extent. The fast moving train plunged into the freight cars, which were, loaded with fer.ilizer, with an awful crash, turning the engine com pletely around and causing it to fall into a ditch near the track. Engineer Wacksmith and his fireman, who was named Charles, both stuck to the en gine and were pulled from the debris after the accident. A few minutes af ter the accident occurred the wrecked cars caught on fire and the baggage and mail car and six freight cars were completely destroyed, and the station which was only a few yards distant, was also burned. Those injured were Engineer Louis Wacemith, who is said to have receiv ed internal injuries ; Fireman Charles, T. M. Mitchell, a colored postal clerk, and several others on the train were slightly injured. Dr. Taylor, of Rocky Mount, was on the train and looked after the imme diate needs of the injured. Those in jured were later removed to the hospi tal at Rocky Mount. The loss to the Coast Line is esti mated at from $50,000 to 100,000. Don't Overdress Tour Child. Woman's Home Companion. You can't begin too early to train girls in taste and sense upon the sub ject of dress. The woman wbo dresses her little daughter expensively, wbo even goes without proper clothing her self to deck her girl in dainty, fresh, fashionable garb, does great wrong to herself and to her child. The fitness of things is reversed when the mother denies herself what is due her to give her child what she does not need. Under such circumstances fine dress is positively harmful to a girl. If any one in the family is to be dressed in fashion and elegance it Bhould be the mother. Simplicity is absolutely necessary for good taste in all tbat relates to children. There is room for pretty color effects and for the refinements of suitability, and all that, but departue from plainness of material and style in children's dress is a departue from good form. What shall be said for the woman wbo has such small sense of the fitness of things as to deny herself the dress suitable for ber in order to put upon her child what is unsuitable and out of taste? BEST COUGH MEDICINE FOR CHILDREN. When you buy a cough medicine for small children yon want one in which you have implicit confidence. You want one tbat not only relieves but cures. You want one that is unquest ionably harmless. You want one that is pleasant to take. Chamberlain's f!oogb Remedy meet all these condi tions. There is nothing so good for the coughs aud colds incident to child hood. It is also a certain preventive and cure for croup, and there is no danger whatever from whooping cough when it is given. It has been used in many epidemics of tbat - disease with perfect success. For sale by E. T. Whitehead & Co., Scotland Neck, and Leggetl'a Drug Store, Uobgood.
