J . 'he commonwealth. ; Published Erery Thursday . Entered r.i Ike Posl-OJice at Saatlu-nd Neck, N V . as Second Cla-3 Mutter . THURSDAY, JULY 21, 1004. SCOTLAND NECK MATCHES GASTONIA. Last week we printed Editor Mar shall's statement in the Gastonia Ga zette that his subscribers had sweet po tatoes from last year's crop aud were also making potato custard from this year's crop. We called upon Halifax county to match it ; and while some of our readers ecemed a little skeptical about Editor Marshall's statement, we assured them that he is a trulhlui man and we pinned to what basalt, however long the stretch of faith. But Scotland Neck matches Gasto nia, for yesterday Mr. Bennett Alls brook sent the editor of The Common wealth a half dozen beautiful sweet potatoes and two nice canteloupes, ail of this year's crop. He mentioned in a note that he could match the Gasto nia man, for he has old potatoes from last year's crop in the slips which he saved for seed. So The Commonwealth's claims for Halifax county are made good in Mr. Allsbrook's contribution from his crop of early potatoes. This, too, opens the way for others to let it be known what they can show in the way of early pro ducts and the large amounts per acre. By way of a stimulus to corn cul ture aroundGastonia. we remind Edit or Marshall that Mr. N. Biggs makes seventy-fivebarrels of corn on three acres about every year. SELE-MA BE MEN. We haye all heard much about the self-made man from our earliest recol lection. The self-made man has always been held up as a safe man to follow, for having carried out his own way and directed his own interests wisely and safely, he becomes the ideal man to lead others. All this is good logic and the self-made man does m most cases merit the confidence ot others in whatever he attempts for the public good. Having trained himself to the vary best thought for the highest pos sible success, it becomes a part of his life to pursue safe and sound policies in whatever he does, eithisr in his own in terests or in the affairs of the public. Two such men the Democratic party has nominated to bead the national ticket, Alton B. Parker for President and Henry G. Davis for Vice-President. The Kaleigh Post sketchees their csfeti brieliy tnus : "Judge Parker had (be advantage of a poor father and learned industry on the fa:m. Alter a term at an academy he went to teaching school. He be gan early in life to help himself and has been constantly at it ever since. He married early ia life and it was in behiif of a relative of his wife that he first engaged in politics. From that day his wisdom aud political sagacity has been known and recognized, and it constantly grew until to-diy he wears the highest honor a political party can g've. His position is a monument to Lis own effort. He is a self-made man. "Hon. Henry ti. Davis, candidate for Vice i'reiitient, began life as a farmer's sen, but forsook agriculture fur a posi tion as a railroad brakeman. He was fcon m;.de agent at an important sta tion a.ni later engaged in commercial pm-snits with his brothers, building up a great business and amassing a for tune. His services have been of ines tirrabio value to his State as the pro moter of good works and his popularity rests upon a most secura foundation. "Such m brief are the two men for whom the Democratic party asks the support of the people. In character and fitness they are surely deserving of the best that can be given them. "They are self-made men." Bishop Joseph S. Key, Southern M. E. Church, writes. "We gave Dr. Moflitt'a '1EETHINA' (Teething Pow der?) to our little grandchild with the happiest results. The effects were al most magical, and certainly more satis factory than from anything we ever used.' 'TEETHINA' (Teething Pow der?) Counteracts and Overcomes the ESecis of the Summer's Heat. A NEW RACKET. Charlotte Observer. Ah enquiring friend asks . of the Louisville Evening Post if the Davis who has been nominated by the Dem ocrats for Vice-President is the same Davis who was .President of the Sonth- em Confederacy. Wonder, by the way, ll they won't trv to work that against tho Democratic ticket in the back- wjods of the North ? CURED OF CHRONIC DIAR RHOEA AFTER TEN YEARS OF SUFFERING. "I wish to fay a few words in praise OI Cbamberlaurs Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy," says Mrs. Matlie Burge of Martinsville, Va. "I suffered fom chronic diarrhoea for ten years and duing that time tried various "med icines without obtaining any perma nent relief. Last summer one ol my children was taken with cholera mor bus and I procured a bottle of this remedy. Only two doses were required to give her entire relief- 1 then decid ed to try the medicine myself, and did not use all ot one bottle before I was well and I have never since been troubled with that complaint. One cannot say too much in favor of that wonderful medicine." This remedy is for sale by E. T. Whitehead & Co. Bern the y7 T8 Kind Yon Hava Always Bought Signature cf e3 gibs n RiSBKnak'' KiJ 1 .
