City Idlers and Immigration.
Richmond News-Leader.
The New Berne (N. C.) Journal de
clares that there are five hundred idle
people in that place who will not work,
although the farmers of the snrround
ing'territory are complaining that they
cannot get sufficient labor to properly
cultivate their farms. It would seem
that there is a large idle population
that does not want to work in Wil
mington, since the Wilmington Mes
senger expresses the hops that the
next Legislature will take up the va
grancy question and so amend the law
as to provide that H the idlers will not
go to the country voluntarily they may
bs iorced to labor for the public in
same way.
Our Wilmington contemporary issat
isfled that there is plenty of labor in
the land if it could be utilized. And fo Is
the Norfolk Landmark ; which remarks
that the rural South would not be cry
ing for immigration if the disturbing
drift towards the cities could be check
ed. "There would be," continues the
Landmark, "no scarcity of labor on
the farms and in the mines of the
South if ihe men who eke out a miser
able existence in the cities were
willing to make an Lonest liveli
hood in the country by the healthful
sweat of their brows."
This latter contention ts true, but it
is to be hoped that even if the idle la
bor in the cities should be put to work
on the farms and In the mines, the
South would still cry for a good class
of immigration. We need that addi
tion to our population for the purpoEe
of building up the waste places. There
is in the mines and on the farms al
ready work for !1 the city idlers, but
there is also room in the Southern
country for thousands upon thousands
of new settlers who will start new
farms.

Two Capital Cases.
Goldsboro Argus.
When the Superior court of Duplin
county convenes in Kenansville the
last week in this month, it is very
probable that only two cases will be
heard. tThey are both capital cases
and will consume the greater portion
of the time, as it will only be a one
week term. The defendants are both
white men. Dan Teacby, who is accus
ed ot killing a man named Rivanbark,
baa been sentenced to be banged, and
took an appeal to the Supreme court.
He was given a new trial. John Dan
iel is accused of klliing Bob Maxwell.
His case went to the Supreme court
and hewas also giyen a new trial
Both men haye been in jail in this
city for soma time. Teachy broke jail
in Kenanevllle once and afterwards
went and gava himself up. It is very
probable that an effort will be made to
have the cases remoyed to some ad
joining county. They have both been
tried in Duplin and convicted.

There is more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
year! was supposed to be incurable.
For a great many years doctors pro
nounced it a local di pease and prescrib
ed local remedies, and by constant fail
ing to cure with local treatment, pro
nounced it incurable. Science has
proven catarrh to be a constitutional
disease and therefore requires constitu
tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cuie,
'manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co.,
Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional
cure on the market. It is taken inter
nally in doses of from 10 drops to a
