The Commonwealth K. E. HILLIARD Editor Published Every Thursday. Entered at the Post-Office at Scotland Neck, N C .an Second Class Matter. MAKE THE TOWN CLEAN. It devolves upon private persons to keep private premises clean, and it de volves upon the town authorities to keep the streets, alleys and ditches clean. This observation applies to all towns generally ; but we are referring more particularly now to Scotland Xeck. Are the private premises in the town kept clean? Does every one see to it that lots are cleaned up, proper disin fectants of lime and the like used wherever needed? Are the town an toritied careful enough to keep all these places in proper condition? Then are all the ditches in town kept clean and opeu as they should be? The questions asked above embrace the interest of every man, woman and child in Scotland Jfeck. If they can all be answered in the affirmative, then it is good for the health and comfort and safety of the people. If they cannot be answered in the affirmative, then it is bad for the health of the people, snd when health becomes en dangered then comfort may cease and ceitaiuly safety is sacrificed. With ibe great amount of rain fall which has prevailed here during this summer it takes no very wise man or professional foreteller of coming events to understand that the sanitary meas ures employed should be stricter than usual. If private persons neglect their prem ises t-j the extent that they become nuisances and stenebful, the town au thorities should see to it that such a state il affairs is remedied. If the public streets, open lots and alleys and ditches are not in proper condition the town authorities should at once exert effort to put them in proper condition and keep up the ef fort tintil it has all been done, and done well. j The Commonwealth suggests that eomeattention be paid to there mat ters i es, something moie than ordina ry attention, for this has been more than an ordinary summer. What interests one citizen in mat ters pertaining to public health, inter ests all alike, and so all may well give attention to these matters. What say the town authorities? Is the town In fine condition? DROWNED IN A WELL. ; A special from Nashville, N. C, to Suudav New3 and Observer said that Mrs. W. G. Harper, the wife of a prom inent young farmer of the community, fell into a well and was drowned. No one knew exactly how it happened but it is thought she stood on the curbing and fell while trying to adjust the rope. The rope was broken and both buckets were in the well. Whllp fishing lor the buckets they found the body of "Mrs. Harper. Thousands Have Kidney Trouble and Don't Know it. How To Tina Out. Fill a bottle or common glass with your water and let it stand twenty-four hours; a sediment or set tling indicates an I unhealthy condi tion of the kid neys; if it stains your linen it is evidence of kid ney trouble; too frequent desire to pass it or pain in the back is also convincing proof that the kidneys and blad der are out of order. What to Bo. There is comfort in the knowledge so often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's Swamp Root, the great kidney remedy fulfills every v,ish in curing rheumatism, pain in the back, kidneys, liver, bladder and every part of the urinary passage. It corrects inability to hold water and scalding pain in passing it, or bad effects following use of liquor, wine or beer, and overcomes that unpleasant necessity of being compelled to go often during the day, and to get up many times during the night. The mild and the extra ordinary effect of Swamp-Root is soon realized. It stands the highest for its won derful cures of the most distressing cases. If you need a medicine you should have the best. Sold by druggists in 50c. and$l. sizes. You may have a sample bottle of this wonaertui discovery and a book that tells more about it, both sent absolutely free by mail, J .) A story comes from Tyrrell county that there was much disorder at Cc lumbia last week because of the arrest and arraignment of persons who were charged with running "blind tigers " Solicitor K. S. Ward, of PJymoutb, and Attorney W. M. Bond, of Edenton.and Mr. T. H. Woodley, ex-mayor of. Co lumbia, were the victims of attempted murder. Judge T. J. Shaw was holding court at Columbia, and acted as commit ting magistrate in several cases in which persons were charged with illicit distilling. Solicitor Ward and Jawyer W. M. Bond, being interested in the cases, were set upon by some unknown persons, who fired at them through the door of their room in the hotel. Sever- il shots were fired but to no effect. A similar attempt was made against ex- Mayor Woodley, which was also futile. Judge Shaw is reported as aing that he went o Columbia to try civil cases only, but ho has said be will not let up on the gross violation of the law. And he is fully justified in soj doing, for the Situation is somewhat se rious. It has been given out that the illicit disti5lers of Tyrrell county have an oath-bound society, pledging vioIer.ce against persons who pester them in their illegal business. It is perhaps the worst state of affairs yet brought to light where illicit distiller ies prosper. Disease takes no summer vacation.
