I - 5? The Commonwealth E. MILLIARD, - - - - Editor Published Every Thursday. Entered at the Post-Office at Scotland lTech,N G .as Second Class Matter. Ve surrender our editorial para graph space on first page this week in order to print in full the President's speech at the Stale Fair in Raleigh laf;t week. Many of our readers will haye no chance to read tha speech ex cept in The Commonwealth; and whether they agree with his politics or nut they are glad to see what the Pres ident said on public questions while at our State capital. To give this oppor tunity we omit our work of "leisure hours" this week. ABOUT CERTAIN ADVERTISEMENTS. It is the policy of this paper not to print advertisements that are mislead ing. However, we are not responsible for what advertisers say la the space they buy. The only responsibility we assume is that all advertisements, like everything else admitted into these col umns, shall be expressed in decent te-aas. There are certain advertisements, however, whose phraseology would lead some to think that the editor, or rcsnager, endorses or rocommends the thing advertised. Some patent medi cine advertisements are so expressed, auJ some theatre advertisements read ti e same way. We take this time and space to say tbat we are not responsible for what auy advertiser says, and we assume no ol ligation but that he shall advertise Iih wares in decent terms, whether tin wre, woodware, hardware, boots, shoes, hj:ts, caps, flour, meal, molasses, patent nrjdicines or theatre plays. WHY HOLD FOR 11 CENTS ? At the meeting of the executive committee of the Southern Cotton As sociation at AsheyiHe September 6tb, 11 cents wa3 fixed as a minimum price for cotton thia season. At a meeting of the State Southern Cotton Association iu Kaieig'u Friday night, October 20th, Dr. R. K. Speight, of Edgecombe, offered a resolution re citing that the minimum price of ll cents fixed by the Association at Asa ville was reasonable ; and urged farm era to stand bv it. The resolution was unanimously adopted by a rising vote. Every indication points to almost a certainty that the cotton crop this year will not be more than eleven million bales. By the simple Rule of Three, or proportion, ii a fourteen million bale crop last year brought an average of 9 cents an eleven million bale crop this year ought to bring II3 cents. The foregoing statements seem to us good reason for holding cotton for 11 cents ; and so belieying The Common wealth tbinks farmsrs will ba wise to do it. President Roosevelt's visit to North Carolina during the Fair at Raleigh w s one of the most notable occasions In the history of the State. Indeed fr m many view-points there has been ik. State occasion that could rank with it. North Carolina is a greater Com monwealth than it ever has 'been be fore, and so for that reason the Presi dent's visit meant more than it ever could have meant before. The general go id feeling that prevailed towards thj President in Raleigh and through out the State wa3 a great credit to our pt.jple. Partisan politics were forgot ten for th8 lime, and properly so, and Sir. Theodore Roosevelt came to North Carolina, and was welcomed to North Carolina, as the President of a great Nation ; and North Carolinians remem bered that their State is an important member in the great sisterhood of States that make up the Nation, and they so demeaned themselves. They gave the strongest testimony of their appreciation of the great man who came amongst them as their Chief Magistrate, for everywhere he met a hearty welcome and every one delight ed to do him honor. Those who came into personal touch . with the President were greatly pleased wiih his personality and only good can come from the acquaintance. It is wcrlh while, both to the President himself and to the Nation, that he has made a tour through the South ; be cause out of it will grow a feeling of sympathy and kindness which could ha e been engendered in no other way ; and this feeling will become a leaven of good fellowship between the North and the South, no matter who shall be the next President, and whether he be Democrat or Republican. Great good will grow out of the President's tour and well may the Nation be glad and rejoice at the gen eral good feeling which prevails as a result of his touch with the South which is, after all, the best part of this " great nation. Two weeks ago Mr. W. C. Whitaker, president of the Halifax county branch of the Southern Cotton Association, and E. E. Hilliard, the secretary, com menced a canvass of Halifax county for thorough organization of the farm ers. This was to supplement, or make more thorough, the organization that was commenced in the county in the early part of the year. The organization has been effected in the following townships : B'.itler- wood, Brinkleyville, Conoconara, En field, Faucetts, Littleton, Eoseneath and Roanoke Rapids. The farmers throughout the county have shown interest in the organiza tion for better prices lor their cotton, and aImo3t ever' one who has been present at the meetings has enrolled as a member of the Association. At the meeting of the State Associa tion in Raleigh Friday night of last week there was much enthusiasm and a strong determination was evident in the representatives from the various counties not to sell cotton under 11 cents. The organization of Halifax county will continue until it is completed. Appointments have been mada for other township meetings as follows: At Halifax Monday, Ost. 30, at 1 o'clock ; at Weldon Tuesday, Oct. ?1, at 1 o'clock.
