A TRIBUTE TO FRANKLIN.
On the occasion ot the two-hundredth
anniversary of Benjamin
Franklin's birth-day, the Richmond
Times-Dispatch paid the following
tribute to the great man :
"Men of more commanding genius
were produced by the American revo
lution, but none more wise, more hu
mane or more public-spirited than
Benjamin Franklin.
"His reputation, like his daily work,
he left to the judgment of time, neith
er caring nor seeking to explain or jus
tify his actions ; and time has abund
antly honored him ana his works.
"A master workman at his chosen
trade, he soon made printing but a
handmaiden to the larger ideas that be
longed to his investigating and untir
ing mind- As editor and publisher he
created a publication which was with
out parallel for a century, and con.
eidering the state of public facilities
for distributing mail has never been
equaled.
But his enduring fame will at the
last rest upon his services to his
country in diplomacy and to his city,
as in public spirit. The stars in their
courses warred on Franklin's side in
the long and trying period of his ser
vices in England and France. He
might have been far less efficient than
he was, and still have aided greatly in
maintaining the war and concluding
peace. But nothing but bis own na
tive desire to help his fellow-man could
ever have stamped him as the first and
greatest example of public spirit that
America has yet known. His life was
one long battle for progress, and the
v!ctorle8 that he won were epoch-mak-lrg.
He founded the first public
library ; he paved the streets ; he or
ganized a fire department ; he founded
a iire insurance company ; and in each
instance he enriched the life of Phila
delphia. The final judgment of the
market place is nearly always right
and the instinctive honor paid Frank
lin's citizenship is a tribute that comes
from the foundations of the hearts of
his fellow-citizens. To-day, in the
pride of our strength, we do well to
honor Benjamin Franklin ; for in bo
doing we set up, unconsciously per
haps, but none the less effectively, a
standard for public spirit and generos
ity and freedom from all spirit of graft
to keep those ideals vital and attractive
in an age of sordid money-getting, in
a monument more to be desired than
many statues, and that Franklin has
done this is evidenced eveywhere by
the honors paid the two hundredth
anniversary of his birth.
"Public-spirited help to hlg fellow
men was the keynote of his lite, and
in answer to that chord, future genera
tions have continued to rise up and
call him blessed."
SOME SOUND REASONING.
Sunday's News and Observer showed
how large crops of cotton have brought
low prices, notably the crops of 1897
1808 and 1904. Then tho following
facts were recited to show the folly of
a big crop for 1906 :
1. The world's visible supply of cot
ton is a million bales greater now than
it was a year ago.
2. Weekly reports in the United
States are larger than they were this
time last year. (10,000 bales more
this week than the corresponding week
last year.)
3. The Egyptian crop is larger than
last year and weekly receipts greater.
4. The Indian crop appears to be
much larger. How much larger no
one can now say, but the weekly re
ceipts are about twice as large now as
they were this time last year.
5. The guano factories report that
the demands for guano now is the
greatest ever known.
6. The demand for mules is almost
unprecedented.
7. The winter so far has been mild
and open, favorable for work.
These facts are beyond dispute.
They show how easy It will be to make
too much cotton, and In that event
they foreshadow the sad fate of the
farmer next fall when the Bears fall
uon him and devour him in the pit
he himself has dug.
The remedy is in the farmers' hands.
M vKE ONLY A MODERATE CROP.
Reduce so you will have labor enough
to cultivate your crop even if it be a
"giassy year." Don't go so deep in
debt to make a big crop that you will
have to sell as soon as you gather your
crop.
Make a moderate crop make it
cheap. Let it be yours and bold it
until YOU (not somebody else) thinks
beet to sell.

Association at Halifax Monday Jan.

This is an important meeting and
all the delegates elected in the town

If the Southern Cotton Association

support of the farmers.
McClure's Magazinb ior February
is quite an interesting number. There
are true stories of various current top

abuses, life insurance juggling, and
political trickery. Many other attrac

vital subjects, to which are added ar
ticles on scientific and general itere3t,
together with fiction.
