"More than a century has passed eince Washington was born, and now throughout the length and breadth of our land, the 22nd day of February is hailed as a day of jubilee." f Such was a well remembered sen tence in a schoolboy declamation whlch.fanned the.first flame otipatriot ism in the child-heart of ..the writer in the days when every school boy had to "sayhis piece'Sor'declaim his speech" on at least one Friday afternoon in each month. Tbisthe one hundred and seventy third birth-day of the great soldier, statesman and patriot, recalls the Vnnnih(nr idea of Washington as we "-"-'J read the lines under the picture m which the kindly face seemed to smile upon us clear through the more than a century of time. And that face still smiles and the American people still love and honor the great and good "Father of his Country ",'and will con tinue to do eo .as .long as they are a people. HOW THEY GROW ORANGES. Crown Point, Fla.., Feb. 12, 1006, Editor The Commonwealth : , Since I came to Florida I have re ceived saveral letters from friends wanting to know something about the cultivation of oranges. This is sent to you for publication, as I am sure there are many of your readers who would ijkft to learn something more about oranges than that they grow on trees As everyone knows oranges first grew here wild, though sour. The sour seed were nlanled and budded into a sour . J. stump, thus making the fruit sweet The buds from this sweet tree are re set in a place where they can be culti vated. It will take an average bud three years to grow large enough to bear after being set in the ground It takes fiye or six years to get t svreet tree from a sour. In 1S05, wher. all tree3 were killed by cold it onh took four year3 to get another start. The dead trees were sawed off level with the earth, then split enough to stick a bud In, and the trees were bear ing again in four years. The grover ure fertilized and plowed about Febru ary, left until Apiil, then fertilized lightly and harrowed, and a!tervard? harrowed just often enough to keej. the grass under. The trees bloom i& February and March and the fruit n npe by the last of October, though many farmers do not finish gathering . until the tree3 are white with blossom ia February. They are picked in rough boxes in the groves, carried to a pack ing house, run through a sizing mr chine and packed. This is the largest orange growing section in the State, (Orange Co.). It is because the lakes are large here and protect the trees from cold, though it is said to be warmer here some times in winter than it is all through sum mer. For the paBt two months I have not found it cold enough to need a coat. Fishing and hunting are fine. The 12 to 18!b. trout in the lakes do not want more than a chance to swallow a troll. In half an hour one can catch a fine mess of fish, and ducks remind me of blackbtrds on a river farm in North Carolina. It seems that thej try to fill the lakes here in winter. The quail are the same kind as are in North Carolina, but a great deal more numer ous. There is something strange about bird doge a thoroughbred bird dog will not live more than a month unless born in the State. It is thought by eome that they eat sand spurs, or are bitten by rattlesnakes. It is said that except they are born here, they do not kcow how to kill a rattlesnake without being bitten. There aie a great manj rsttesnakes here and they don't look good a bit to a stranger in Florida. There are also a few panthers and wild cats here, but there is no danger of being hurt by them. They are the running stock the only time they are g-en is when they are caught in traps. There is plenty of deer here. People from most all parts of A merica come bore to hunt. Florida is a moneyed State. There seems to be lots of money here. The weather is always pleasant, bat with all this I can't say that North Carolina is not better. Very truly yours, A Tarheel. A FEARFUL FATE. It is a fearful fate to have'to endure the terriible tortue of Tiles. "I can truthfully say," writes Harry Colson.of Masonville, la., "that for Blind, Bleed iug, Itching and Frotruding Piles Bticklen's Arnica fc'alve, is the best cure made."
