DAVISON, UCTLAND VT iww rem TO?v (W xfv.. iW leaned the Ter?PS Many Winters By A traveling man was saying on the streets in Scotland Neck a few days ago that the privilege of selling intoxicating liquors in Winston- Salem makes it a prosperous town. In a ord, Here's the Secret. that tbe whl8key busjnes8 there is what keeps it prosperous. He was mistaken. Here's the secret taken from a paragraph in the Charlotte News : "The correspondent of the the News at Winston Salem states that 1,000 wagon loads of tobacco were brought into that city In one day this week. That is the sort of hustle in business that is to be seen all over North Carolina." t n I The cotton crop this year has been a great disappointment, and the situation is pretty clearly stated in this paragraph from the Wilmington Meseenger : "Cotton manufacturers and cotton Farmers Heavy Losers. buyer8 eay lhat the preM!ntcrop is the poorest thev have handled in many years. An unusually large proportion of tbe cotton put on the market is off grade. This is due, to a large extent, to the scarcity of labor, much of the cotton having to stand so long in tbe fields after it has opened because the farmers can not get pickers. The southern farmers are lo-ing thousands of dollars daily because of this state of affairs." 1 I I Newspaper readers remember how the smart cartoonist plastered Mark Hanna with dollar marks and made almotit every picture of him in the papers ridiculous with such representations. The Dollar Mark. This wm polltics to be Bme and tbe wor!d ac cepted it as a clever stroke by the cartoonist in showing up Mr Hanna in an unfavorable light to his opponents. But the dollar mark may well apply to men closer to us than Mark Hanna was, and m other things than politics. As was said to the writer recently, some men size up all others by the money they can make or handle or command. It was suggested that cer tain persons size up others by an interrogation point and a dollar mark together, (?$) meaning, "How much money can he finger?" And there Is no doubt that such is the case with many people. It was said by one who was expressing reerets that more people did not hear Prof. Middleton's great lecture at the graded school two weeks ago, that if Superintendent Wilson's personal Invitations to the parents of the town to attend the lec ture had been stamped with a dollar mark (!) perhaps more people would have turned out to hear the lecture. We do not say it because it is a pat phrase or because it may please or displease certain persons to see it in print, but with deep regret at the painful fact, we say that the people ot almost every community are becoming commercialized. And a level-headed man said recently that tbe bands will burst if taxed much more and there will be a lamentable explosion. Really, it is time to call back to the spirit of other days when people laid less store by the almighty do'Iar and saw other things in life and in men besides the ideal indicated by the dol lar mark. When followed to its last analysis there is something mighty wrong in the dollar mark spirit, for Solomon said nearly three thousand years ago : "He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye." Hit The Progressive Farmer has recently done a good service to the farmers by reprinting from Watson's Magazine some articles by Tilden Sempers which clearly expose the frauds In the many Good Service lo ihe gtock food Qa thQ market- Xhe stdtement is Farmers. made thai, there are nearly one hundred and fifty of these "condition" foods on the market, and by the results of various exper iment stations it is shown that they are altogether fr&uds. Not more than five per cent, of these stoclc foods, it is claimed, is other than wheat feed or something that the farmer has all about him, and this five per cent, ot mineral or vegetable addition is often harmful to stock rather than helpful. Then the robbery that is practiced against the farmers m these stosk foods Is something appalling. It is shown that these foods are sold for from $800 to $1,000 per ton, some selling as high as $1,600 per ton, and one or two actually reach the price of $1 per pound, or $2,000 per ton. It shown further iu the discussion that iD much of the poulrty fool sand is a large component part sand which the chickens can pick up at will. Some tests have been made with sheep and steers and hens, and the tests showed that the sheep and the steers and the hens all did better without the "condi tion" food than with it. All ot which go63 to show that men are continu ally humbugged and do not take time to count the cost in such things. To be sure, the local dealer who sells thes9 stock foods to the farmer thinks, as the farmer thinks, that the sleek, fat cow or the fine feathered hen shown in the picture on the package are realities, and that the barn yard scene is also a reality somewhere, and so they accept what the agent for the food3 ?ays as reliable. When the agent who sells the stuff is gone the dealer, quoting him, says to the farmer, "Just touch the button and the food will do the rest," meaning that whoever feeds it to his stock or poultry will heve such as Is shown in the picture on the package. We tay again that while the local dealer really thinks he is doing the farmer a favor by selling these ''condition" foods, there is little doubt that there ia great fraud in the manufacture of such foods, and it Is well enough to ex pose it. The old saying that plenty of rubbing will make the horses look well holds good yet. The independent farmers of the long ago sail you must rub your horee a plenty to make him look well "Rub him inside with the corn," they said, "and outside with the cob? and he will ba sleek and fat." Tbe same common sense applies to tbe other stock and the poultry. PILATE'S WASH rASINT. Dec. 2, 'OG (Luke 23:13-25.) Ono of the most dramatic scenes that ever transpired in a court o Justice was that wherein the Roman governor Pilate yielded , tn the de mands of the rafih seeking the lite of Christ. The Hli!t UUd clipperj- pnlMctau, goaded to decision by an attack upon his political ambition, called for a basin of water, and bath ing his hands in the pretence ot tho human wolves crying out for blood, he washed away all bereonal com plicity in the crime, and then signed the death warrant. The act of rilate was f alm. clear headed, deliberate, cakuiatli) bru tality. All men execrate Judas, who betrayed his Master, for- tl.e price of a slave, but he acted a;; he did be cause he was incapable of r.c.!ing from any higher level. Tacket, of Alliance, Ky. as a year of blood ; which flowed so copiously from Mr. Tacket's lungs that death seemed very near. He writes :"Severe bleeding from the lungs and a frightful cough had brought meTat death's door, when I be- .ni,!nT rr K'inu'rt New Discovery tried Electric Bitters; and I rejoice to for CorJ9Up,.ion with the astonishine 1 of it : the say, three bottles effected a complete j re8Uu that after taking four bottles I j "je nowada3 cure." U bo a rival cf Caesar, was the fatal stab. And the coward, hypocritical, venal gov ernor bribed, not in his hand nor i i Ills head, but in his political ambi tioa dramatically washed his haud cf the whole matter. There is year politician, a full length portrait. Do not confound politics, and statemai-ihip. There U nothing a politician will not do to hold his job. He is usually a ve neered expert who has r.o conscience to be disturbed or waipod, all njovcl qualities he looks upon as a gambler looks upon cards, to be skui.led, and j played according to the e:;egencic3 of the game, who can play it any way because the card? are marked. To' win in the political struggle lv3 will cut the throat of his best, friend, and smile while he is doing it. Among his office furniture Pilate'.? wash basin holds a prominent place, and whenever he has, by the hands of others, done a particularly dirty job he washes his fingers with invisi ble soap in invisible water, winks hi3 eye, and says, "Well, I am not re sponsible. It was the committee, or the caucus, or the convention." How mean Pilate looks when you get him under the microscope. And how large other men look by con trast. Politics is the science of gov ernment, and it need not he a cess pool. It ought to be true tnat, the voice ot trie people is lihj uc ul God, but it is not except occasicn- lly. The voice of the people in Christ's day was "Crucify Him: Crucify Him!" That was the voice cf the pit, of anarchy, of lynch law, of assassination. And he who should have stood as a bulwark of good gov ernment against- it, bent UK3 a reed before the storm, and to save his own political head, and hold lm place at the public trough, allowed the blood of an innocent victim to bespatter the judicial ermine. Wash his hands, Indeed! There was not water enough in the multitudinous seas to cleanse the stain. This theme is of practical import ance to the times in which we live. What this age demands is men Gf nerve; men of unflinching loyalty; men who cannot be bribed or bro ken; men who can be Ueteateu, dui who can not be compromised; men who cannot be frightened by threats, nor wear the collar of a boss; men who will not crook the hinges of the knees, that thrift may follow fawning; men whom the newspapers cannot bombard out of their rugged independence; men who can see the interests of the whole country, as well as the little section they repre sent; men who will not keep silence in tho presence of great iniquities thongh countenanced by their con stituents. Statemanship, in all countries, can point to such men. When the angry passions of the mull'taac nave rissu about them, they have held their God-given position, though like ocean billows, gnawing at the base and rolling over the tops of the lighthouse, the steady light shines on, before, during and after the ttorm. These are the beacon lights that conduct the world to liberty. To dodge responsibility, that was the aim of Pilate. How much of that snirit there is in the world. Things are done by committees, by trustees, bv boards of directors, by organiza tions, that no man would uare to Go alone, and each man washes his hands and says, "My responsibility Is so small It is practically nothing." But he deceives himself. When evil is done, every man is bound to pro test against it, and if he does not do It. and allows it to go on, he Is guilty of the whole transaction, come to re are a good many people nowadays who use r uate s wash basin.
