Mrs. Killcrease Born In Ncrto Carolina Before the Declaration of Independence. (Special to News and Observer.) Statesville, N. C, July 23 Mr. J. A. Houpe. of Statesville, has receiv ed from his sons, Messrs. John and Claude Houpe, who live in Oklahoma, a copy of the Dallas (Texas) Semi- Weekly News, which has a number of items of interest to North Caroli na people in its columns. The paper prints a photograph of Mrs. L. Kill- crease, probably the oldest woman in the country, and the following facts are given in connection with the photograph: "The picture is taken from a pho tograph of Mrs. L. Killcrease taken June 24, 1907. Mrs. Killcrease was born in Halifax county, North Caro lina June 10, 1776, nearly a month before the Declaration of Independ ence. She came to Texas witn rela tives in 1886, and now lives at Pine Mills, Wood county, Texas. Mrs. Killcrease is said to be in good health, barring the natural feebleness at tendant upon an extreme old age. North Carolina, where she was born and lived for more than 100 years, is f imed for the longevity of its peo ple. Centenarians are not uncom mon there, the unsurpassed health fulness of that region with its resin ous mountain air, its pure water and equable temperature conducing to prolonged life." Original Lha rater of Dickens Living. (National Magazine for August.) When mention is made of the empire-builders of the Canadian West, the name of Lord Strathcona in stantly comes to mind. As Donald Smith, he played an important part in the exploitation of the great un developed country. He equipped a regiment, the Strathcona Horse, in the South African war. He has done much toward stimulating the ties that bind the Imperial and Colonial governments. Lord Strathcona was knighted be cause of his public work, and was raised to the peerage because of his philanthropy. This latter point in his character was well brought but by the celebrated English novelist, Dickens, in his representation of the Cheeryble Brothers mentioned in "Nicholas Nickleby." It is not gen erally known that Lord Strathcona was the original of this shetch. Hundreds of people yearly go through painful operations needlessly, Idealise they never tried Man Zan Pile Kemedy. (Youth's Companion.) Lourenz Kromar, of Vienna, has invented a"muisic typewriter." With the aid of this instrument the com poser may produce a typewritten scroll without the trouble of making the characters by hand. All that he has to do is to place his himself at the piano and give free play to his cre ative fancies. Every stroke upon the keys is registered in regular musical characters upon a paper as a scroll would upon a drum. The machine op erates through a system of electric contacts with the piano keys. The registering apparatus, which resem bles an ordinary typewriter in size, may, in order to remove discordant sounds, be placed at a distance from the piano, even in an adjoining room. The most eminent medical scientists are unanimous in the conclusion that the generally accepted limitation of human life "is many years below the attainment possible with the advanced knowlcdg of which the race is now pos sessed. The critical period, that de termines its duration, seems to be be tween 50 and GO; the proper care of the body during this decade cannot le too strongly urged; carelessness then being fatal to longevity. Whitehead & Co. M onuments & Gravestones Milking Machines. (Prof. A. M. Soule in Southern Farm Magazine of Baltimore for August.) We have tested a milking machine for some time at the experiment sta tion, milking from 35 to 40 cows for a period of about six months. The cows took kindly to the machine and gave down their milk as a rule. There were one or two stubborn cases, however, due we presume to the peculiar individuality of the an imals more than to anything else. The machine will undoubtedly draw all the milk out of the milk cistern, but whether it will furnish as much stimulation to the nerve cells as is necessary to the well-being of the cow cannot be stated definitely at this time. You realize, of course, that this is a very important matter. We believe there is little to chose between hand milking and machine milking. Our experience leads us to belieye that a good competent man will milk and care for about as many cows in a given time as can be milked by the machine. The ma chines are also somewhat difficult to keep clean. We think that they will probably be improved in the near future, and that if one could not se cure labor and had a competent man to take charge of the machine, he could use one advantageously, but we do not think they will prove more economical than hand milking where satisfactory laborers can be secured. In our opinion one of the chief draw backs to the milking machines is the necessity of some form of power with which to operate it which makes the installation quite expensive, and we do not think the machine will give satisfactory results in the hands of indifferent labor.
