Lump kin offered his resignation as pastor of the Baptisit church here, to take effect February 15th. Mr. Lumpkin stated that for some time he had felt that he would be compelled to take this step for the sake of his health which he found was being impaired by the effects of this climate. He said that his resignation was final and he desired the church to act on it at once and secure another pas tor as soon as possible. After the observance of the Lord's Supper, Mr. Lumpkin retired and j 1 1 1111 m cne cnurcn neia conierence to con sider the resignation of the pastor. While Mr. Lumpkin's resignation was a great surprise to most of the congregation, and keen regrets were felt on all sides, in compliance with his wish the resignation was accept ed and a committee was appointed to seek out a new pastor for the church at once. In offering his resignation Mr. Lumpkin took occasion to say that the Scotland Neck Baptist church furnishes one of the most desirable pastorates in his knowledge. He said that the loyal support which the church gives its pastor and the large number of well trained church work ers, make it a most desirable pastor ate; and that words were inadequate to express his regrets at having to offer his resignation and sever his connection with the church. He has been pastor of the church for more than three years and a half anu tne cnurcn nas greatly prosper ed under his ministry, the member ship having been enlarged and the contributions to various benevolent causes having been greatly increas ed. He has been one of the leading spirits in the Tar River Association and he has greatly endeared him self to the Baptists of this part of the State and to the people of Scot land Neck and community generally. He has done a good work in this community. Perhaps his most con spicuous achievements were accom plished as leader of the temperance forces in Scotland Neck in winning the prohibition victory last Novem ber. Mr. Lumpkin has accented a call F. Whitehead & Co.'s drug store. (Reported to The Commonwealth.) December 24th, 1907, by previous arrangement friends began to gath er at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ru fus Cherry in Roseneath township, Halifax county, where there was to be a gathering of friends to enjoy Christmas festivities. At 11 o'clock Christmas morning there were gathered a happy com pany of the following: Mrs, Sue Helen Draughan, Mrs. P. A. Askew, Mr. and Mrs. William Askew, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barns, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Cherry, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Leighton, Miss Hannah Wilkins, Mr. Isaac Draughon and Mr. Paul Cherry. These, with the children, made a happy throng, who were invited in to the parlor, in which stood a large Christmas tree loaded with presents and decorations. The wax candles and flash-lights made the scene one of marvelous beauty. Soon Messrs. Rufus Cherry and William Askew began to distribute the presents and all present were happy by being re membered. The grandmothers lived again the days of childhood in the shouts and merry laughter of the children, and by the happy twinkle cf their eyes and the tinge of cheek, one could al most read the thoughts of their by gone days. After the distribution of the pres ents, all were ushered into the din- ing room, wnere a ricn least was spread of which all partook and en joyed. After dinner the parlor was given up to the children, who with blast of horn, crack of toy pistol and shouts of glee made the old house ring. As soon as the dark shades of night came the Roman candle, the sky-rocket and the cracker told again of their joy. When the company broke up, all felt younger and happier for having forgotten the cares of the world and for a short time lived again the scenes of childhood which told us again, that, after all, we are all ehildren trying to keep in mind the joys of past days. We are all very much indebted to Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Cherry who spared neither pains nor expense to make all happy, and we return to our homes praying that God will grant us many such scenes before He calls us to the great reunion above.
