He'was born in Greensville county, j Virginia, August 20th, 1835, son of Fielding Brown and Elizabeth Jarratt Brown. He was edu cated at Richmond College, after leaving which he came to Halifax in a clerical capacity. Shortly after wards he went to Petersburg to pursue further his chosen work of pharmacy, but owing, however, to ill health he abandoned his profes sion and went to live on his farm in Dinwiddie county, Virginia, where he remained until the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. Though exempt from service on account of physical infirmities he joined the 13th Vir ginia cavalry in 1861 and served the Confederacy throughout that long conflict, participating in many of the most sanguinary encounters. Shortly after the close of hostili ties he came back to Halifax and purchased the drug business then conducted by Pearce & Co. He thus began life anew, but with skies dim med with the mists that fall from the clouds of a shattered dream and with an affliction due to a cold con tracted during that heroic struggle, the sufferings from which he bore through the remainder of his life with infiiiite patience and fortitude. 'Neath the soft blue skies of the Old North State he wooed and married in 1S68, Elizabeth Simmons, daugh ter of Col. Thos. Simmons, of Sussex county, Virginia, and in the historic old town of Halifax they dwelt for forty years in a close companionship 0 a 0 New Line OF UEENW UALIT I XL TO-MORROW ! T0-M0-,!R0W !
