C, March, 9, 08. v' Departed this life-on Thursday, March 5that his hom.e,-ia Haifax, N. C, Capt. George Gilliam, in the seventy fourth year of his age. Captain Gilliam was born in Gates county, N. C., October 31st, 1834, was the second son of Henry A. Gil- 4iam,.n,d Elizabeih .Creecy. w. He was a consistent member ot the Prestestarit Episcopal church for many years, renewing his baptisimal vows in confirmation when he came to mature age. ' . He served throughout the Civil Warj and was a brave, gallant soldier, nsver shrinking frpm danger when' duty called. At the out break of the Civil War he was living at St. Lbuis, Mo., and was a member . of one of the city companies. ' . When North Carolina seceded he resigned his commission and hurried South and cast his lot with his native state. He enlisted in the 1st Reg. of N. C.' Vol.' with Capt. James K. Marshall, Col. D. H.'Hill. After the' enlisted time of this regiment expired, which was six months, his brother, Julian, and himself raised . a company and he' again went into active service, in April 1862, and he remained until desparately wounded at the third day's fight at Gettysburg. He was left on the field of battle and report ed among the dead. Was taken pris oner and carried to David's Island where for weeks he was critically ill with his wound. Afterwards he was taken to Johnson's Island Lake Erie, arid remained a prisoner unl il ex changed a few days before General Lee's surrrender. Captain Gilliam was captain of Co, C 52 N, C. Reg., General James Johnson Pettigrew's Brigade, A. P. Hill's Corps, and Heath's Division, Army of Northern Virginia. . , . . : In 1867 Captain Gilliam was mar ried to Miss Marie Antoinette Mul len, daughter of the late James W. Mullen and Susan Clary, of Hertford, N. C. Gaptain GMliiam was related to some of the most prominent families of Eastern North Carolina. School, after having been very sick for about ten day3 at Hotel Roanoke, is very much improved. Mrs. E. J. Brown continues to be right sick, she hasn't been at all well for several weeks. . Mrs..T. W. Fenner is out again, Mrs. Fenner was quite sick for sev eral days. ' : Mrs. E. E. Purvis, (formerly Mis& Lucy Suggs) of Tarboro, N. C, vis ited her sister, Mrs. Ira G. Shaw, last week. . Mr. Stanly Wilson, of Harrisburg, 111., who is now going to school at Staunton, Va., was visiting Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Gowan last week. Mr. James Gilliam, a former Hal- fax boy, who is a member of the firm of Turley Bro3. & Gilliam, of Fore3t City, Ark, arrived home last Thursday morning just a few hours before his father, Capt. Geo. A. Gilliam, expired. Mr. Gilliam re ports that things out there are in satisfactory condition, and the money panic is practically a thing of the past. The firm with which he is connected does a very large mer cantile business. . Mr. Ira G. Shaw, rural carrier for Route No. 1, reports that last week at the State Farm Capt. Christian lost eight mules, valued at $2,000, and had several sick that would probably die. A veterinary surgeon went down from Raleigh to find out the trouble, and said it must be ptomaine poison, but after examin ing the feed concluded it must be some other local cause, as the feed proved to be clean and pure. The meeting was called to order by its president, Miss Kathenne Kitehin. Then there was a guessing contest. Misses Kather ine Kitehin and Nannie Shields had to draw, and Mis3 Nannie Shields being the lucky one was presented with the' prize and the booby -prize fell to Mis3 Annie Harper. -- After enjoying delicious refresh ments we adjourned, thanking our hostess for a pleasant evening.
