(Snow Hill Standard-Laconic) If you have made up your mind to live in a town, then stand up for it, and if you know positively no good, then silence is golden. Do all you can to help along every man who is engaged in legitimate business. Do not send away for -every thing nice you want and still expect the home men to keep a stock to suit the whim of one or two customers. The suc cess of your fellow townsmen will be your success. No man liyeth to him self and no man does business inde pendently of 'his fellow business men". Take your home paper. Do not imagine the big dailies fill up all this space. : There aremany . little crevices of a good cheer, social sun shine, personal mention,' in the home paper that the big dailies do : not print. Then do not abuse your neighbor. The main difference in the number of his faults and your own' is that you see through a mag nifying glass as a critic. The ill omened, the croaker, can do a town more harm in a minute, than two good citizens can repair in a month. THE ENGLISH TEA-HABIT. Ward, of Dyersburg, Tenn., writes : "This is to certify that I have used Orino Laxative Fruit Syrup for chronic constipation, and it has proven without doubt to be a thorough, prac tical remedy for this trouble, and it is with pleasure I c lfer my conscientious reference." E. T. Whitehead Co. A writer in Everybody's Magazine tell the story of the collision of an American business man with the English tea habit. He had gone to London as the manager of one of the j biggest enterprises in which Ameri can money is invested. He was formally-introduced to all his heads of departments on the .first day he went to the office. After everybody had strolled away and he had turned to his desk, a small clerkly-looking person approached him and said: "riease, sir, I wish to know it we can'have some new tea rings." ....VTea' rings?" said the manager; "what in the name of the Thames Embankment are tea rings?" "Rings we put on the stove when we make our tea, sir. Thank you." "When you make your tea?" "Oh, yes, sir; we have our tea regularly every afternoon.- Thank you." The manager looked into the tea business. He found the clerk was right. The whole office force quit work in the middle of the afternoon and drank tea. The proposition did not appeal to his American mind, so he issued an ordei; stopping the tea drinking. There was a wild protest. Here was this American overturning the precedents of centuries. Here was a man who dared to deprive the Britons of their tea. The manager held out for a month and then capitu lated, for his board of directors stood with the clerks. The directors drank tea too. He rescinded the order, bought the new tea rings, and kept ! tab on the amount of gas used in brewing this necessary beverage. He discovered that the tea-thirst of the clerks in his offices cost the com pany for gas used to brew it $385 a vear. (Selected.) It ha3 become the fad just now to have the lace on the gown the same shade as the material, so that there will be an absolute blending of color. This effect is very hard to get, be cause one often picks up odd colored i silks, but it is quite a different mat- j Jones ter when it comes to matching the lace for it. ... The shops carry little variety, ow ing to the fact , that there are so many tints that it would be impos sible to have them all, so one has to resort to home methods. Buy a tube of oil paint the desired color; place the contents in a cup of gasoline. When dissolved pour into a larger vessel. "Put a small piece of lace in first to see if it is the desired shade; if too deep, add more gasolene. .Af ter dip ping the lace into it shake gently and hang it in the open air. When thoroughly dry place before a stove or hot register for a few min utes. This will take the disagree able odor away. Black lace is apt to get shabby in a short time and turn a rusty tinge. A very good way to freshen it up i3 to take two pair of old black kid gloves and boil to a pulp in a quart of water. This will leave a black liquid, which hardens when cold. Melt it down and dip the lace in when hot. Leave for a few seconds, then take out and hang on a line. When dry press with a hot iron. of "Now they say that every woman has ten distinct personalities." "Don't let my wife hear that." "Why, not?" "She'll demand a hat for each of them personalities." "You don't want me to come to see you any more?" exclaimed the young man, startled and indignant. "No, Mr. Feathertop; not any more." "Yet you let me kiss you a month ago, when you had known me only a few days!" "You foolish fellow," said the pretty girl. "That kiss was only a a retainer." Chicago Tribune. Kennedy's Laxative Cough Syrup is the one that children like t-o well to take as it tastes nearly as good as maple sugar. Nature has provided the stomach with certain natural fluids known as the digestive juices, and it is through these juices that the food we eat is act ed upon in such a way as to produce the rich, red blood that flows through the veins of our, body and thereby makes us strong, healthy and robust, and it is the weakening of these diges tive iuices that destroys health. It is our own fault if we destroy our own health, and yet it is so easy for any one to put the stomach out of order. The death has occurred at Scmer sham, England, of Mrs Holdich, in her one hundred and first year. She was born in that village on Junuary 11, 1808, and up to the age of 18 was so delicate that her parents feared she would never grow to woman hood. ' CYouth's Companion.) "Mv mother was the making me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt that I had some one to live for, some one I must not disappoint," said Thomas A. Edison to a writer in the New York World. Mr. F. A. in "Thomas Alva txlison, says that all who knew her appreci ated her goodness! : "I did not have my mother very long," Edison said, at tne time spoken of, "but in that length of time she cast over mean influence which has lasted all my life. "I was always a careless boy, and with a mother of different mental caliber I should probably have turn ed out badly. But her firmness, her sweetness, .her goodness were potent powers to keep me in the right path I remember I used never to be able to get along at school. 1 don't know now what it was, but I was always at the foot of the class. I used to feel that the teachers never sympa thized with me, and that my father thought that I was stupid, and at last I almost decided that 1 must really be a dunce. My mother was always kind, always sympathetic, and she never misunderstood or mis judged me. But I was afraid to tell her all my difficulties at school, for fear she, too, might lose her con- fidencein me. "One day I overheard the teacher tell the inspector that I was 'addled,' and it would not be worth while keeping me in school any longer. was so hurt by this last straw that I burst out crying, ' and went home and told my mother about it. Then I found out what a good thing a good mother was. She came out as my strong defender. Mother-love was aroused, mother-pride wounded to the quick. She brought me back to the school and angrily told the teach er that he didn't know what he was talking about, that I had more brains than he himself, and a lot more talk like that. In fact, she was the most enthusiastic champion a boy ever had, and I determined right then that I would be worthy of her and show her that her confidence was not misplaced." The. That's it. If you want to keep your strength, use it. If you want to get tired, do nothing.
