THE COMMOroUTH. Published Every Thursday r.v V. C. MOORE, Editor and Manager Entered it the post-office sit Scotland Neck, X. C, as Second-Class Matter. Thursday November 12, 10OS. Publisher's Announcement. It is a settled point in newspapw ethics that editors nd publishers are not responsible for the vies of correspv-adents, and the publication of a communication does not mean that the editor or publisher endorses the communication. 1 "to. CoMDtnwiALTa adheres to these general pnci ples. A WORD PERSONAL In assuming the editorial and business management of The Commonwealth I realize that I am succeeding a man who has serred the people of Scot land Neck and Halifax county faithfully and well for some twenty or twenty-five years. The Commonwealth has be come an indespensible medium of information in hundreds of homes and its style and make up lias taken on a "family favor." While the new man agement will strive to inject a new personality and to keep pnee with the progress and growth of a prosperous and progressive people and com munity, it is the earnest hope of the writer that every reader will recognize it as their old time associate and not as a rank stranger. The policy of the paper will be to foster and incourage, and to advocate with all its power and influence those principles that tend to promote and en courage the Lest moral, edu cational and economic welfare of Scotland Neck, LTalifax coun ty and the State of North Caro lina. In politics it will be thoroughly Democratic, be cause of a strong conviction that the success of the prin cii&Mi 4 p-cteg of Dtao cr&ey is essential to the peace and dignity and the best inter ests of our people. The Com monwealth has been a great agency for good and has nobly championed every progressive movement for the betterment of this community and this has been made possible only through the liberal support of a high personnel of patrons. I trust that under the new management the paper will merit a continuance of their confidence and liberal support. This much said, I wish the people of Scotland Neck and Halifax county to feel that I am in their midst to serve every interest that will prove to the mutual advantage, of both pub lisher and patrons, assuring all that the people's interests shall be my interests, having no en emies to punish and no friends to reward. V. C. Moorb. Don't "cuss" your local pa per because you think it isn't what it ought to be. Remem ber if it is to add improvements it must have your material sup port. The best way to build up Scotland Neck is to talk Scot land Neck and bring business here. The best way to bring business to Scotland Neck is to advertise in Thh Common wealth. The turmoil and agitation of a campaign is over now let us quit knocking and go to boosting. The growth, deve lopment and prosperity of Scot land Neck and Halifax county depends on your efforts, loyalty and enterprise. The importance of family re ligion has of late received especial emphasis in the Pres byterian Standard of Charlotte. This subject has been too much neglected by all of our churchoa. Let I fie family altar be re-established. Biblical Recorder. "What do you think of this: The Greensboro Record informs us that the one time "famous" E. Spencer Blackburn of "de 8th" Congressional district, of North Carolina, who sometime ago pitched his tent in Oklaho ma, has been making Democrat ic speeches in that State. If "E Spencer" really wants to reform and is not professing a hange of political heart for the sake of office, he has prob ably gotten far enough away from eis old tricking grounds. AN ANNOUNCEMENT. With this issue I sever my connection as editor of The Commonwealth. On the 23rd of December, 1S87, I assumed editorial con trol of the paper, and from that day until the present it has been my one care and purpose to give to its readers the best paper that its environments would permit. Asa result of a long and serious illness just one year ago, together with what physicians and occulists call over-work from long and con tinued service, my eyesight has so failed that I can no longer do the work of an editor. For twenty-one years the very heart-throbs of my life have gone into the columns of this paper, and its readers will par don me for saying the personal words that it is with inexpress ible regrets that I have to lay down this work and retire from a service which has been the chief delight of the strongest years of my life. In spirit I now shake hands with the thousands who have read these columns and whom I fondly call my friends, and surrender the trust to another. I would be less or more than an ordinary mortal if I did not feel a depression of sadness at these conditions; and I would be a monstrous ingrate did I not feel and express my thanks to a generous public for their appreciative support and loy alty. To say that my work has been hard and taxing is to put it mildly; but if I have render ed any service through these columns it has been a labor of love for the people of my State, for the interest of Halifax coun ty ad for the good of Scotland Neck. It goes without saying that my views have not always been the views of all my read ers on all subjects, but high heaven is my witness thai my every thought and purpose as an editor has been for the high est and best interest of the great and good people I have served. Tender thoughts and stirring emotions crowd for expression here, but I take this space only to say that 1 ive up this work with the kindest feeling to wards all whom this paper has touched in any way. It is in deed a sore disappointment to me not to finish more complete ly much work which has been planned through this stretch of years, but with malice towards none and with love to all I re sigyi it to another, in the fond hope that he may do it better than I could have done it. "icX'c ohm mcminissc juvnbit." Mr. V. C. Moore now assumes control of The Commonwealth as editor and manager, and I commend him to all its patrons as a young man of sterling worth, capable and willing to manage whatever may come before him as he guards well the interest of the people whom he will faithfully serve. I take pleasure in appending hereto a word of well-merited praise for Mr. Moore by the News and Observer with which he has been connected for some time. E. E. HlLLIARD. MR. MOORE RESIGNS. "The News and Observer re grets to announce the resigna tion of Mr. V. C. Moore as as sistant business manager. He leayes this paper to assume the management of the Scotland Neck. Commonwealth. He is a young man of the high est integrity, is enterprising and progressive, and will suc ceed in maknig The Common wealth one of the best papers in the State. The Commonwealth And the busy, building town of Scotland Neck are to be con gratulated upon securing Mr. Moore for the management of that excellent paper.
