Shields have returned from Raleigh, where they attended the Diocesan Convention last week. Mesdames W. H. Josey, H. I. Clark, Rebe Shields and T. W. Fen ner have returned from Raleigh, where they went to attend the Dio cesan Convention that was held there last week. A Vote of Tbanks. The trustees of the graded school in regular meeting Monday night, passed a vote of thanks to all who i took part in the play at the graded school recently. The proceeds of the play which amounted to nearly $70 net, were for the benefit of the school building. Commencement at Spring Hill. The commencement exercises of the Spring Hill Public School will take place in the chapel at Spring Hill May 27, 1909, beginning at 8:15 o'clock. Scores of men, women and children, both white and colored wept as if their hearts would break. The grave was completely covered with beautiful flowers of every de scription. The deceased leaves a mother, father, adopted brother and three uncles, Messsrs. J. W., D. W. and W. J. Hardee. The bereaved parents, relatives, and friends should be consoled with the thought that their loved one is not dead, but gone before to be there to greet them on that beautiful shore when they, too, have crossed the river of death. For a while it seemed that he could not possibly escape uninjured. The horses were finally stopped, how ever, before they had gone far, gmd no appreciable damage was done to Sunday when Mr. W. T. Hancock's I , , , . , . , . ! horse became frightened at Mr. W. 1 1, e . ,., ,, lb. Smith s automobile; the other on Monday when Mr. Charlie Jones' horse ran away breaking his buggy to pieces. Gross Ingratitude J. L. Josey for which he paid the sum of $45.00. A man named Char lie Padget who came to carry the ox to Mr. James in Pitt county, repre senting to Mr. Cary Lawrence, of Lawrence, that the ox belonged to him and that he would sell him for $20.00 instead of carrying him to the market in Tarboro as he intended, sold him to Mr. Lawrence, and skip ped the county. Rev. Jesse James was required to pay Mr. Lawrence $20.00 before he could recover the ox and send him on to his father. The ox thus cost Mr. James $65.00. A few hours before Mr. Padget left with the ox Mr. James paid ten or fifteen dollars for Padget to keep him out of jail. Guild Meeting.
