THE COMMONWEALTH. Published Every Thursday BY J. C. Hardy, Editor. .Entered at the postofficc at Scotland Neck, N. C, as Second-Class Matter. Thursday, December 0, 1900. Publisher's Announcement. It is a settled point in newspaper ethics that editors and publishers are not responsible for the views of coi respondents, and the publication of a communication does not mean that the editor or publisher endorses the communication. Thk Commonwealth adheres to these general prici-ples. Congress met in regular session Monday. It may be a rather stormy session. The way to build a town is to stop knocking and get to work. A united population is what counts. The prohibition amendment to the Alabama Constitution was lost by a large majority at an election held ir that State last week. The State re mains prohibition, however, by act of the legislature. Will Receive tbe Court House. The County Commissioners at their meeting Monday, named Tuesday, April 12th, 1910, as the day they will receive the new court house. It is their plan now to have a big celebration. To this end the following commitee was appointed: Col. W. H. S. Burgwyn, of Weldon, E. L. Travis, Halifax, A. P. Kitchin, Scotland Neck, W. R. Harvey, and Eugene Johnston, Littleton, Dr. J. A. Collins, Enfield, John L. Patter son, Roanoke Rapids, T. H. Taylor, Brinkleyville, S. T. Thome, Jr., Air lie. Tbe above committee will meet and elect a chairman, and appoint all necessary working committees, invite speakers etc. Let everybody begin planning from to-day to make this celebration the biggest occasion ever seen in the county. The Commanwealth tenders its services to the committee to assist them in their work. Halifax Court. The criminal docket of Halifax Superior Court was completed Fri day of last week. Wright attended an educational meeting in Washing ton, D. C. From there he went to Baltimore and Philadelphia on bus iness connected with the school. The first Thanksgiving Day of the school was one of joy and brightness to the students. Services were held in the Assembly Hall after break fast. The students spent the day in singing, playing games, receiving callers and amusing themselves gen erally. The feature of the day, the big dinner, was greatly enjoyed. The long delayed dynamo has ar rived, so brighter lights are in the near future. A laundry plant has been installed and is running smoothly. A glee club of twenty members has been organized and is practicing regularly. The music department isgrowing so that an assistant teacher, Miss Annie Lee Davis, of Goldsboro, has been added. It has been necessary to order additional pianos. A force of hands are at work con verting the woods to the rear and side of the buildings into a park. The young men have organized a literary society which they have named in honor of Governor Jarvis. The following officers were elected; Pres., J. L. Rawls; Vice Pres., R. L. Jones, Sec. &Treas.. D. A. Windham. A Young Women's Christian Asso ciation has been organized. Miss Mae Jones of Louisburg College as sisted in ihe organization. She made interesting talks on the history, pur pose and work of the Y. M. C. A. The officers are as follows; Pres., Miss Pattie Dowell; Vice Pres., Miss Rosa Guthrie; Cor. Sec, Miss Nellie Allen; Rec. Sec, Miss Jennie Wil liams; Treas., Miss Agnes Smith. The school is justly proud of the chemical labratory which is thor oughly up-to-date and convenient in arrangment. Since the opening of school Prof. Austin has been busy getting the equipment in place. Now it is complete, the students seem to get much pleasure out of the work. $100 Reward, 3100. The readers of this paper will be pleased to loan that there is at least one dreaded disease that science ha i been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Ca tarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby de stroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assist ing nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails ta cure. Send for list of testimo nials. Address, F. J. C, Dec. 4, 1909. The many friends of Rev. J. H. Jarvis formerly Pastor of the Naha lah and Scotland Neck Presbyterian Churches will be grieved to learn of the loss of his oldest son, Bennie. Two weeks ago last Tuesday Ben nie was out with his father squirrel hunting in Hyde Co. In passing through the woods, the hammer of his gun became entangled in some way, causing the gun to fire. The charge entered his under arm near the shoulder, and so shattered the arm that amputation was neces sary. He was brought to a Wash ington, N. C. hospital where the op eration was performed. Lock jaw resulted and the bright boy who was a Candidate for the Gospel Ministry yielded up his young life to the grim destroyer death on last Tuesday. The interment was in the Washing ton Cemetery. Surely the tenderest sympathy of all their friends will be extended in this sad affliction. C. G. Christian. CASTOR I A For Infants and Children.
