Thursday, August;! 8, 1010. Both the ring organization and the anti-ring candidates all agree to abide by the result of the primary tomorrow (Friday). Every man that votes in the pri mary to-morrow is supposed by that act to pledge his full support to the nominpps rvf the nrimarv at the No- I1V11"V-" w 1 " vember election. There will be no scratching at the general election on the 8th of November. Mayor Gaynor, of New York City, was assasinated on Tuesday of last week just as he was in the act of nilino- for Eurone. The mayor is still living and it is thought by his physicians that he will recover. The assassin claims as his reason for the dead was that the mayor discharged him as employee of the city and therefore cut off his means of get ting bread and butter. REGULAR DEMOCRATIC TICKET. At the meeting of the State Re publican Convention in Greensboro last week Congressman Jas. M. Morehead, from the fifth district, won a complete victory over Nation al Commiteeman E. C. Duncan and was elected state chairman by accli mation. Marion Butler made the fight for Morehead and it is gener ally conceded that Butler is virtually at the head of the Republican party in this State. What a shame upon any people that will allow suh a man to lead them. His leadership, in fact the man himself, is repulsive to the best element of any people. The Republicans of the State can never make their party respectable with Butler as their leader. Away with Butlerism. We desire to urge upon every Democratic voter in Halifax County the importance of attending the pri mary to-morrow (Friday). Go and fight it out for your choice and be dose with it. The two tickets that will be presented to the primary are printed in another column. We do not feel it our duty to tell the vo ters just how they should vote. Both sides are democrats the anti-ring Rgainst the organization, or to nar row it down a little finer, it is the "outs" against the "ins." The tickets are before you, do your duty every voter in the county by go ing to the polls and voting for your choice and then abide by the result as to what ever that may be. This is what we expect to do. Let peace and harmony prevail all during the day and do not utter a word that you will be ashamed of afterwards. For Coroner: H. G. ROWE, Weldon Township. Mr. Editor: In order to set my self straight before the public I de sire to make the following statement concerning reports about Mr. Travis' and Dr. Green's taxes being unpaid. I have never made any charges that they have not paid taxes but that records at Halifax on August 8th. did not show them listed for the years mentioned below. I was re quested to look this matter up as it had been looked up before or I should not have known anything about it. After looking it up on account of the illness of Mr. Travis I did not intend tn nnhlish or make it tmblicand only mentioned it to a few friends but it I leaked out and wa3 so bitterly de nied that it become necessary for me to make the following statement to vindicate myself: On Monday August 8th 1910, Mr. L. W. Leggett and myself went to Halifax and searched records care fully in Register of deeds office at tax list for the years of 1907, 1908 and 1909, and that Dr. I. E. Green did not appear on either list for the year of 1909, but did appear on list before Register of deeds for 1907 and 1908. I again searched same records fully Tuesday Adjust 10th and asked Mr. Percy Norman clerk of the Reg ister of deeds. Mr. J. 11. Norman, Register of deeds being out ot town, to go over these lists with me and Mr. E. L. Travis does not appeal on either 1907 or 1908 as listed any here. He does A. CARD. ANNOUNCEMENTS. I earnestly asx tne support ui vw.o ifax county. Respectfully, W. F. BUTTERWORTH. FOR THE SENATE. I hereby announce myself a can didate for State Senator from Hali fax county, subject to the action of the Democratic primaries to be hem on the 19th. of August, 1910. A. Paul Kitchin, FOR SHERIFF. I hereby announce myself a candi date for the office of Sheriff of Hali fax county, subject to the action of the Democratic primaries to be held on August 19th. J. A. House. FOR COMMISSIONER. I hereby announce myself as a candidate for the olhce ot Commis sioner of Halifax county, subject to the action of the Democratic pri maries to be held August 19th. S. T. Thorne, Jr. FOR REGISTER OF DEEDS. To the Eemocratic voters of Hali fax county: I desire to announce that 1 will be a candidate for the office of Register of Deeds for Hali fax county, subject to the action of the Democratic primaries to be held on the 19th day of August, 1910. Any support given me will be grate fully received. Respectfully, J. Waldo Whitaker. FOR COMMISSIONER. I hereby announce myself as a candidate for the office of Commis sioner of Halifax county, subject to the action of the Democratic pn- i i v 51 i ' Republican Hopes. The letter printed below was writ ten by Mr. Geo. W. Shearin, a well known Republican of the county, and mailed to Mr. J. E. Bowers, Brinkleyville, N. C. It was for warded by the postmaster to Mr. J E. Bowers, Scotland Neck, and re ceived by him. We presume it was intended for Mr. W. E. Bowers, an other Republican, but Mr. Shearin made a mistake and addressed it to our popular Treasurer, who is also a candidate for this office again in the Democratic primary to be held the 19th inst. Here follows the letter: "Halifax, N. C, July 21, '10. Mr. J. E. Bowers, Brinkleyville, N. C. My Dear Sir: I have been in com munication with Mr. Butler, of Washington, D. C, and he seems to think that if we try and send good men to the State convention that we will be able to elect Hon. J. M. Morehead as State chairman of the Republican party. And by do ing this we will bring many good recruits to the party that will help to reduce the high and unjust taxes that we are now burdened with by the control of the old Democratic ringsters. I guess you have seen or will see a circular letter gotten out by the Anti-Democratic party which -explains the situation very clearly and you can see very clearly from that letter the object in view. Very truly your friend, Geo. W. Shearin." We understand that Mr. Shearin with other good republicans partici pated in the mass meeting which has placed in the field subject to the re sults of the Democratic primary, what is known as the Anti-Ring Domocratic Ticket. If it were pos sible, we would like to know how miy others participating in the alleged mass meeting were animated by the same spirit and "object in view," that is, to bring "many good recruits to the party." Our advice to the Democrats of Halifax county is to vote only for those who have been faithful. Roanoke News, 11th. inst. appear now on 1909 lists also Dr. I. E. Green ap pears on 1909 list but were not on there on Mo.iday Aug.8th. Dr. I. E. Green appears on bottom line and ink shows it has recently been put on, Mr. Travis appears near the top. I here is no amount of taxes exten ded for I. E. Green but pencil mark says given to tax collector. The fol lowing statement was made to me Aug. loth by Mr. I. G. Shaw at Hal fax. That on request of several people at State Farm. I looked up records of tax lists in Register of Deeds office Friday August 12th 1910, that 1 carefully searched the records, regular list, deliuquent lists and list of those listed before the Register of Deeds, and Mr. E. L. Travis did not appear on either list for the years 1907 and 1908, he was on list before Register of Deeds for the year of 1909. Dr. I. E. Green appeared on list before Register of Deeds for the years of 1907 and 1908, but did not appear on any list for 1909. I had Mr. J.H.Norman, Register of Deeds to go over lists with me and he could not find him listed at all for 1909 and he thought he must have listed un der some other name. Mr. Shaw also made statement as follows: Several months ago I heard Mr. R. H. Daniel tax lister and col lecter for Halifax township since 1905, or 1906 say that Mr. E. L. Travis had not paid him any tax since he had been tax collector, he said this in pr esence of myself and several others. Mr. L. H. Hall made statement as follows: About July 1st 1910, 1 heard Mr. R. H. Daniel tax collector and lister for Halifax Township say E. L. Travis had not listed or paid any tax in several years and that he was go ing to list for him this year and pay it himself. Also three others made same statement to me as Mr. Hall who heard him at the same time. 1 understand they have an affidavit made by Mr. R. H. Daniel, tax col lector for Halifax township, which they claim states Mr. Travis has paid his taxes for last several years. I have not seen it and do not know its contents. Mr. Daniel told me Tuesday, Aug. 16th. at 3:30 p. m. that the only affidavit he had made was that Mr. Travis was listed for 1909 and giving amount of taxes and says he did not state it was paid for it had not been paid yet. Do they let you read this affidavit or do they read it to you themselves. Very truly, T. F. Whitley. T. F. Whitley, who is a for the office of Treasurer on Anti-Ring Democratic ticket, and N. W. Warren, candidate for Sheriff on the same ticket, have been circula ting about the county that the under sighed has neither listed or paid paid any taxes for several years. This statement is absolutely false, and if the authors had taken the trouble to make the proper investigation they would not have been in the position of circula ting such a slanderous report, and by proper investigation it could easi ly have been shown to have been un true. For the years of 1904 and 1905 the undersigned paid his taxes to A. H. Green, Tax Collector for Weldon township; for the years of 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1909 he paid his taxes to J. L. Harris, Tax Collector for Weldon township; and the affidavits of A. H. Green and J. L. Harris are made a part of this card. A. H. Green, being duly sworn, says: That he was tax collector for Weldon township for the years 1904 and 1905, and that as such tax col lector he collected from Dr. I. E. Green his taxes for said years.
