Cards have been received here by friends of the groom-to-be, which read as follows: "Mr. and Mrs. Julian Moss Powell, request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their sister. Miss Lillian Augusta Bell, to Mr. Thomas Monroe Jenkins, on Tuesday afternoon, the fourth of October, nineteen hundred and ten, at half after five o'clock, Memorial Baptist church, Hampton, Virginia." Mr. Jenkins is a Halifax boy, and has quite a number of friends and relatives here. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Christmas Jenkins, both of whom are now dead, and a grand son of the late Captain J. M. Griz zard. He is a very popular and de serving young man, and has numbers of friends both here and elsewhere. For some time past he has been in the mercantile business at Rosemary with his cousin, Mr. Joseph Butts, Jr., who is a son of our townsman, Mr. J. C. Butts. Miss Bell, we understand, is a very attractive young lady, and pop ular with a large circle of acquaint ences. Here's another Halifax boy to the front. Mr. Stuart Hill, a former Halifax young man, who now resides in New York city, and a son of the late Judge Thos. N. Hill, of this place, writes Mr. Frederick Froe- lich as follows: "For three months this summer I hod the pleasure of acting as private secretary to Colonel Roosevelt, about whom you have no doubt heard much in the days gone by, not to mention the present. And such work! I thought I would have brain fever. I took down all the speeches he deliv ered on his western trip, including the famous 'New Nationalism' speech that created such a sensation. Last week they asked me to come back to The Outlook and put his speeches and writings in shape for book form, and I expect to be here fnlli n v?0l on lororpr Tt icsvavT interesting work; lots of things to see and hear. "The colonel is the most energetic, the most attractive, and the most remarkable man I have ever seen, and judging from the way big peo ple, not only of this country, but of the world, write to him and call on him, I am inclined to think I am not the only one of that way thinking. On yesterday his callers were the Austrian Ambassador to the United States; Lt.-Gen. Baden-Powell, the British soldier, who held Ladj'smith against the Boers; Ernest Thompson Seton, the Naturalist; Dan Beard, the Artist; and several rooms full of celebrities from the United States." Mrs. E. J. Brown went to Jarratts last week to visit friends and rela tives. Mr. Mack M. Furgerson, of Lit tleton, was a visitor here Monday. Miss Pattie Shaw, of Weldon, has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. I. G. Shaw for several days. Judge J. M. Mullen, of Peters burg, was here a few days ago. Mrs. S. M. Gary spent a day or two last week in Petersburg. Mr. T. Walton Worthy, of Spart anburg. S. C, has been spending this week here. Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Brown and little son, Bernard, of Troy, spent a day here with Mrs. W. F. Coppedge last week. Miss Annie Joyner, of Conway, has been here several days to see Mrs. Vaughan. Captain William Faison, of Balti more, is here this week to see his brother, Colonel Frank Faison. Mrs. H. W. Gowan and children, Misses Leonora and Bessie Hower ton, who have been summering in Maine, arrived home Tuesday. Mr. Edwin C. The North Carolina Experiment Station has just issued a very im portant Bulletin on "Self-Sterility of the Scuppernong and other Musca dine Grapes." The results reported in this Bulletin show conclusively that these grapes are self-sterile, that is, will not produce normal fruit unless fertilized by pollen from male grape vines. These results were ob tained by (1) covering the branches during the blooming season, (2) a study of the germinating flower of the pollen, (3) microscopic study of the dry pollen, (4) examination of the structure of the flowers, and (5) the influence of male pollen on the crop. The second part of the Bulletin discusses the application of these re sults. It deals with the kinds of male vines to plant, where to plant thein for best results, and the number of such vines required in a vineyard. It also discusses the influence which weather and pruning have on the yield. One of the most valuable subjects treated is dealing with the growing of these grapes from seeds. xino jjnntLiu io iiu. i-uJ aim is lor free distribution to residents of North Carolina. It can be had by writing to Director C. B. Williams, Experiment Station, West Raleigh, N. C. . WORLD'S FAMOUS DYSPEPSIA PRESCRIPTION. The sev enth annual convention of the Nation al Rivers and HarborsCongress, which will beheld in Washington December 7, 8, and 9, will undoubtedly be the most important gathering the organi zation has ever held. It will find the Executive and Congress in harmoni ous relation upon the great salient feature of waterway improvements. The attendance is already assured of the most prominent men in public life, including the President of the United States and in all probability the Ex-President, Col. Theodore Roosevelt. It is now high time that all commercial and trade bodies -interested in waterway improvement, should be making up their list of dele gates to the National Rivers and Harbors Congress. The convention promises to have an enormous attend ance, and accomadations for the vis itors to the national capitol, will be in great demand, especially as the date of the convention will be in the week of the reassembling of the Fed eral Congress. Subjects of vital im portance to this great body of water way enthusiasts will be discussed, the intention of the officers and directors of the Congress bein? to make the coming convention more truly rep resentative of the whole people than ever before, if such a thing be possi ble. The election of Asher G. Hinds, who was narrowly saved from the Democratic tidal wave in Maine, will is generally pleasing to old members of the House of both parties. Un questionably a man of ability, in the extremely responsible position of clerk at the speaker's table, Mr. Hinds while displaying a rare and accurate knowlebge of parliamentary law and practice, showed he was a fair-spiri-ed man and never led the speaker or presiding officer for the time into er ror. Democrats generally spoke of him as a "very decent fellow." That he will be a useful repesentative both parties freely admit. When Caleb Powers, nominated for Congress by the Republicians of the eleventh Kentucky district, takes his seat iri the House, his district being overwhelmingly Republican, he will not be the only man in high public position in Washington who has been in jail for alleged crimes. Powers, as is well known, was for years in prison charged with complicity in the murder of Governor Goebel, and later pardoned by Governor Wilson. Jus tice Horace H. Lurton, of Tennessee, Was imprisoned at Columbus, Ohio, during the Civil war. He was one of Gen. John H. Morgan's raiders, with whom he was captured on their rash venture into Indiana and Ohio. General George W. Gorden, represen tative from the tenth Tennessee dis trict and commander of the United veterans Association, spent some time in a northen prison after his capture at the battle of Franklin, where, lead ing his brigade in a charge on the Un ion breastworks, his horse carried him far in advance of his men and into the arms of a merciful enemy, who might haveslain him, butsparedhim for a rest from his impetuosity in a secure northern prison. Congress man Richardson.of the eighth Alaba ma district, was in 1863, a confeder ate prisoner in a Murfreesboro, Ten nessee, jail under sentence to hang as a spy. He says he would doubtless have met such a fate, but for the fact that General Forrest surprised the Federals and rescued him. So there will be two members of the next house who have had to suffer the agony of sentence to death, when Ca leb Powers takes his seat. Nominations for the Congress are now proceeding rapidly. The Demo crats appear to be earliest in the field, having nominated about three-fourth of 391, the present size of the House, while the Republicans have nomi nated about 55 per cent of their candidates. New York, with 37 members of the House, is as usual, last to make nominations. Harmony for liress. A beautiful woman also studies the harmony of painting a well kept home; takes care to have the house painted with paint that will continue to look bright, clean and fresh look ing. A most appropriate and handsome Souvenir Tag will be given, as an evidence that the donor has contrib uted to preserve the memories of a womanhood of whom he is proud and to whom he owes an eternal debt of gratitude. The good women, the charming girls and the pretty misses, daughters and grand-daughters of these women, who deem it a privilege to aid in honoring their mothers and grand-mothers, will un dertake the distribution of these Souvenir Tags. God save the mere man who fails to immediately sur render to their charm and to their presentation of his duty. Even those who do not sympa thize with the late Confederacy, liv ing in this State under the present prosperity these women have made possible, will honor themselves in honoring a grand womanhood, whose noble devotion to what they loved entitles them to all respect. Their memories should be preserved for emulation of all who strive to do their duty as their consciences dic tate. Vhat the people of the States of the late Confederacy owe .these wo men, -not only for their inspiration to the soldiers, not only for their maintenance of the homes, not only for their loving care of the sick and wounded, not only for their care of J the dead, not only for their preser vation of the memories of their he roes, but for their devotion, their fortitude, their aid since the death of the Confederacy, which animated and encouraged the men in their stupendous efforts to rescue their State from the very slough of de spondency and to rebuild its shat tered fortunes, is all too well known and felt to make it necessary to urge their claims.
