And 'round the board That all the joys of life afford; With loved ones at our side; With memories of a plenteous year, And hearts that brim with love and cheer Let come whate'er betide! For all the loving Lord has shared, For loved ones one more cycle spared. We humbly kneel with bowed heads bared, And homage pay To God alvvay This glorious Thanksgiving Day! Thanksgiving Day! Each fertile field Has given forth its generous yield To fill each granery. The lucious fruits and golden grains From orchards and from boundless plains Rewards our industry. v For all the summer's toil has brought; For all the Lord in love has wrought, Upon each home hearth's sacred spot We kneel and pay To God ahvay Our praises this Thanksgiving Day! Thanksgiving Day! From far apart We gather 'round, heart close to heart, And old love ties renew. A smile for those we meet once more; A tear for lAved ones gone before, And vows to be more true. For all the joys of love and life; For light that guides through storm and strife; For harbor sate from tempests rife, We kneel to pay To God alway Honor and Praise, Thanksgiving Day! SET APART FOR GRATITUDE. TiiafiRsoiving the Day of all uays to Remember Our Blessings. On Thanksgiving day most of us, will deliberate intention and perhaps no little effort, close the door by which grumbles enter and open wide the other door that lets in prai-e. For once gratitude has the right of way and we are just a little bit ashamed to be found in theduH com pany of complaint. At the Thanks giving service, if we attend it, we giva ourselves to a deliberate enum eration of our blessings and remem ber, perhaps, how many there are icsj iciVOltti Liiciii OUrSeiV'to. xiiCip is not a time for a complete and : eimanent smoothing out of the wrinkles of care and perplexity be fore we sit down at the bountifully laden table, but on the whole we are ready to enter into the spirit of the time. Is Thanksgiving, then, a reversal or an accasional accentua tion of the proper habit of a christ ian's life? If there must be rusty hinges, should they be upon the doors of praise, while the other door of grumbling works with constant eas-e? The undisputed right of way in the Thanksgiving season ought to be the right of way for all the year. Ex. Ills Smartness Hereditary. Frcm the postoffice steps Freeman Davis watched Professor Lane cross the road and enter the wheelwright's shop on the opposite side. "Goes in an' out free as y ou or me. " Mr Davis remarked to Jabez Sewall, "an' nobody knows how many letters he is entitled to writ e after his name." Jabez nodded. "But what I can't just make out is how he come by all his smartness. Far's I know, nor 2 of his forebears ever amounted to much in a lit-rary way." "What you talkin' about?" Mr. Davis demanded, warmly. "You know well's I do that his father could spell Nebuchadnezzar quicker than any boy in school." Youth's Com panion. In disorders and dis eases of children drugs seldom do good and often do harm. Careful feeding and bathing are the babies' remedies. Scott's Emulsion is the food-medicine that not only nourishes them most, but also regulates their digestion. It is a wonderful tonic for chd dren of all ages. They rapidly gain weight and health on small doses. FOR SAI,E EY ALI, DRUGGISTS S contains a Good I.uck Penny. SCOTT & BOWNE. 409 Pearl St.. W. T. MAUPIN. DAY OF THANKSGIVING. Governor KHchin Issues a Tnanksgtv- I ing Proclamation. Governor W. W. Kitchin issued the following Thanksgiving Procla mation Saturday: "During the past year peace and order have prevailed in our State and we have had bountiful harvests and great material progress, for all of whica we should be duly thankful. A state no more than an individual, should live by bread alone, and we should likewise be thankful for the spread of knowledge and the quick ening of the public conscience which uchsaied to us. Therefore, L William W. Kitchin Governor of North Carolina, in pur suance of custom and in accordance with law, do hereby proclaim Thurs day, Movember the 24th, 1910 a day of Thanksgiving, to provide special opportunity for the people to lay aide their accustomed work and render thanks to Almighty God for His manifold blessings. Charity to the needy and kindness to all, better even than prayer and songs of praise, will exemplify our appreciation of the blessings which have come to us. In witness hereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the great seal of the state to be affixed, this the 19th day of November, 1910, and in the one hundred and thirty fifth year of the American inde pendence. W. W. Kitchin, Governor. By the Governor: Alex J. Feild, Private Secretary. Try Apple Trees. Plant apple trees; one or one hun dred, or one thousand. Oregon and other Western States have found a gold mine in raising apples for the retail markets, pre paring them for the purchaser with great care-and charging for them accordingly. It is not the raising of fancy ap ples for which we plead, but for more attention, more intelligent at- ! tention, to the apple tree. To get good results you must take care of the orchard all the year round. You must digand pruneand spray and gather as if the profit for the year depended on that one act. The climate in Kentucky has not changed, neither has it changed in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. The apple trees have been neglected for other things of more pressing importance. In planning for the new crop and all the crops that are to follow take the apple into consideration. Begin with the selection of the best varieties for your market. Then o-et the best stock suited for your climate. Then study apple culture and follow it week by week all the year. That is what pays. But you say "the apple crop around here is a failure and the trees are dying out." Neglect is killing them, as it will your livestock. Begin over again. Learn from your neighbor's failure and plant apples for the market; ap ples to sell. Home and Farm. But there is no necessity for a Miss being a-miss. WITH OUR OWN HEARTS. Annual Season of Praise and Prayer Belongs to Each of Us. The president and the governors of states appoint Thanksgiving day; but each person makes it for him self. It cannot be made in haste. The choicest things of the year must be gathered together in thought and put into it. First are the perma nent treasures of life. God.is our father. We have his word and his spirit. We are in his family, not as servants but as sons, and "the son abideth fdrever." We have, therefore, a future unbounded by time in the father'? house. These everlasting values enrich present life beyond limit. The day when men's attention is concentrated on them becomes Thanksgiving day. We put into it also what the years have given us family affections and friendships. Ties suspended by cir cumstances, not broken, are renew ed, as faces of absent ones reappear in the home. The blessings of this year must be put into Thanksgiving day. The work that was planned when the winter's shortest days began to lengthen is done. The harvest is completed. We do not count the losses today. We put the disappoint ments and sorrows out of sight for the present. We are not making a fast but a feast. The tables are loaded with good things, which sym bolize the good things of the year and of all the years and of the eter nal life. And how -many of them are here with us the husband, the wife, the children, father and moth er, friends at hand and messages from those afar, the home and all it contains. We have a christain fel lowship, a great and prosperous country at peace with the world and with a helpful mission to other na tions which is being nobly fulfilled. But something is still lacking. It is the flavor to the food, the piquancy to the appetite, the flowers to adorn the table. What we give gives value to what we have. "God setteth the solitary in families." If there is a chair vacant at our table some lonely one must be found to fill it. While there are hemes unprovided, ours cannot be completely ready for the festival. "Send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord." Thus our table is adorned and its plainest food made rich. Now the day i3 made. We unite in thanksgiving and we share the feasts in a happy fellowship sur rounded by an uncounted multitude of merry making homes, whose un spoken greeting to one another ex plains the meaning of our national Thanksgiving day, "For the joy of the Lord is your strength." The statue of Stonewall Jackson placed in the State House grounds at Charleston by the women of West Virginia is the work of the famous sculptor, Sir Moses Ezekiel. With Sir Moses its modeling was a labor of love, as he himself was a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute when Jackson was an instructor there, and the sculptor fought in the Confed erate army and shared the intense admiration that the brilliant exploits of "Stonewall" aroused in the men who followed him. No bronze or marble can picture Jackson the man of instant decision and swift action, or indicate the fiery military genius that flamed up in him. But it can and does present the serious, sad faced man of deep religious nature, the soldier who was moved in every action by the devotion to duty and his sublime faith. The statue in Charleston will stand as a monument to valor and genius, and an all-too-tardy tribute to the great general from the State in which he was born. Perhaps it is even yet too early to expect the prejudices of sectional conflict to have subsided sufficiently for all the people of a border State to unite in a tribute to one of the leaders of either side, but the time is rapidly approaching, if it has not yet arrived, when Union men as well as ex-Confederate will come to regard Stonewall Jackson as the greatest man born in the ter ritory that is now West Virginia. The soldiers of every country ac knowledge him as a transcendent military genius. His lofty personal character, his devotion to his people, distinguish him as a man worthy of any honor. In the capitol at Washington is the national hall of fame, where each State may place the stataes of its favorite sons. West Virginia has already filled its niches with lesser lights. But she may very well re consider her choice, and upon one pedestal place the statue of hcrgreat est son, so that in the caoitoi of a re united country Stonewall Jackson can once again meet Robert Lee. Baltimore Sun. Fistol Toting. The worst respectable criminal that a person can think of is the pis-tol-toter. His crime is wholly iude fensible and without provacatiot. Why a fellow should have any de sire to weight down the rear end of his pants with the popular "32-cali-bre Smith and Wesson" pistol, while living in a civilized country among enlightened people, is hard to under stand. We have studied the matter carefully and about the on!y shih factory solution to theque.-ti"n that has ever presented itself to our mind is that the fellow who is wedded to the pistol toting habit, and is often found with his 32 or .38 calibre pis tol on his person, is posessed of 22 calibre brain, if indeed it has a cali bre at all. A large per cent of the crime of our country is the result of pistol-toting. The habit is feeding the graveyards, filling our court rooms, making hundreds of heart broken and ruined homes in fact, it is a twin brother to the liquor habit, and the two together are simply robbing heaven and populat ing hell. And still we go along through life and wink at the habit as if it were nothing mere than a trifle. Lenoir News. YOU TAKE NO RISK. Our Reputation and Money are Back of This oifer.
