Typhoid and Cholera as well. In fact, there has been discov ered in Thebes, Egypt, a medi cal book, the oldest on rec ord, written one hundred' years before the birth of Moses, and in this book the Hookworm dis ease is describ ed . It has not been but a few L'H-Vi ild-R" years since it Cut referred to in article aa Illustration No. 3, "Worm was first disCOV attaclied o lining of intestines sucking the life blood of ered and found the infected individual. gQ preva lent, in America. Before this it was thought that that large number of weak, pale and delicate people were so be cause of inherited physical defects and could not be cured. Now, however, this has been proven not to be the case, that most of these people are so owing to the Hookworm infection and can not only be cured but restored to health in a remarkablyshort time. PREVALENCE. About one-third of the people, all classes, old and young, have this disease."- NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL CAPITAL DISTRIBUTION. Found chiefly in warm climates where the heat, sunlight and oxygen produces the most ideal condition to. hatch the eggs"of the worms as they are deposited in the soil by those suffering from the disease. Cold kills them. MODE OF ENTRANCE INTO THE BODY. About 90 per cent of the cases begin as groun (Pitch, dew-itch or toe-itch as it is variously called. The worm burrows through the skin on the foot, and in doing so sets up aninflammationonthe foot that gives rise to this condition. After penetrating the skin on the foot they get -into I lie blood stream and are carried around to theupper part of the intestines, just below the stomach, which is their feeding grounds. Here they attach themselves to the lining of the intestine, like in Illustration No. 3, and begin to suck the lite blod or tne individual away About 10 v per cent Hookworm Eggs Greatly Magnified. Nearly one half of the people have this disease. You are probably with that half. Come and see, anyway. Both the county of Halifax and the state of North Carolina have appropriated, the necessary funds for the carrying on of this work. Now, it is up to you to take ad vantage ot this opportunity. EXPERIENCE OP A LAYMAN WITH HOOKWORM DISEASE. Dr. John A. Ferrell, Assistant Secretary for Hookworm Disease, Raleigh, N. C. Dear Doctor: Understanding that you are collecting a few testimonials concerning the results effected by curiog hookworm disease, if my personal experience with the dis ease will be worth anything, 1 shall be glad for you to use it in the humanitarian cause. As a youth I wras pale, anemic, and, generally speaking, was in poor health, never able to accomplish much work. As time went on, perhaps on account of my weakened con dition, I became ruptured, and went to a hospital for an operation. My blood was so weak that I could not stand the operation. An examination was made which showed that I was suffering with a severe case of hookworm dis ease. I was treated then and at once I began to improve. In the space of two weeks I was so much improved that I was able to take the operation. I then began to develop, and within two years gained sixty-five pounds. 1 have since graduated at the University of North Carolina, play ed football on the 1908 class team, represented Carolina in an intercollegiate debate, and am now strong and healthy and weigh 165 pounds. A cure will transform a man. I therefore urge our weak-blooded men, women and children to be examined and treated. Patric M. Williams. Burgaw, N. C, September 20, 1910. VICTIM OF HOOKWORM DISEASE DESCRIBES HIS FEELINGS. "I feel tired all the time almost, and get tired very easi ly, and have little or no energy. My spirits are low almost all. the time. I feel full after eating. My memory is poor. 1 feel that I am getting weaker. I have a disgust for fatty foods. I prefer being alone rather thanto be in the com pany of others. I have no desire even to converse tete-a- tete with the ladies. After taking a walk 1 feel broken down and tired all over, feel more like lying down than anything else. It tires me very much to stand any length of time. In the morning when getting up I.feel tired and broken down also.- Under these conditions I am not able to do justice to my work." TThe patient describincr his svmptoms above is a male. ! age 19, and weighed 145 pounds. He was raised on a farm, ravenous appetite, was restless at mgnt and often Mention Hade o! Many Important News Items Abont the Capital City. Special Correspondence. Washington, D. C, July 8. Sena tor Francis G. Newlands, of Nevada, on Wednesday, introduced a bill to establish an interstate trade com mission. It is to have the same re lation to Industrial corporations that the interstate commerce commission has to interstate carriers. Corpor ations, trusts, combinations, and all business, esreept transportation, is to be regulated by Federal authority. Senator Newlands is a Democrat and is on the right track. On Wednesday Representative Henry, of Texas, made one of the best speeches on the floor of the House that has been delivered for many a day. He scored dollar diplo macy as practiced by this govern ment in no uncertain terms. He also lambasted the silly title hunters for international marriages where dollars were exchanged for empty titles. Mr. Henry is right. There is too much dollar dmlomacv and icfr many international marriages, which seldom turn out well. ft Senator Shively, Democrat, of In diana, from the committee on the census, reported to the Senate the House bill authorizing a reappor tionment of the country into Con gressional districts based on the last census. Let it pass. Senators and Congressmen not on the inside are curious to know why the Senate has authorized an ex penditure of $3,000 as salary for an attorney for the government print ing office, to be employed by the joint committee on printing. The need of such officer is not clear to the members of Congress generally nor to any one else who is not among the initiated. It is to be hoped that the House will not agree to any such expenditure. Economy and reform in the government service should be the watchword. Representative Richmond Hobson, of Alabama, introduced a bill for a highway from Niagara Falh, N. Y., to-New Orleans, La., to be known as the "Clay-Jackson Memorial Highway," and authorizes a centennial celebration of the bat tle of New Orleans to begin Janu ary 8, 1915. Senator Swanson, of Virginia, made a speech in the Senate yester day in support of Federal aid to the "inland commerce" of our country. The Senator said that the annual "mud tax" in the Udited States was $250,000,000, and this sum could be saved if the roads were made equal to those of England, France, and Germany. He wishes the govern ment to appropriate $20,000,000 an nually for the next five years for the improvement of post-roads and rural delivery route3 in the different States. President Taft, with a party of Congressmen, have gone on a trip on the President's yacht, the "May flower". There are some reciproci ty doubtful Thomases with him, who he will no doubt convert to his views before they return. Observer. Mrs. Cook Tells the Truth. Dextei Ky. In a signed state ment, Mrs.' Cook tells the truth about how Cardui brought back her health and strength. She says, "I could not get any relief until I tried Cardui, the woman's tonic. 1 suffer ed more or less for ten years, and was so weak and nervous I could hardly do my house work. Now I am in better health than ever before am regular as clock work, do not suffer at all, and gain strength every day." Thousands of women have baen helped back to health by Car dui. Try it.
