Items Gathered from the Town and Country. , - - - - Easter Sunday. Good Friday tomorrow. Don.t forget the ball game Mon day. "Tompkins' Hired Man" Tuesday night. The past several days has been rather cool for the season of year. There was right much frost Tues morning and ice Monday morning. The old Roanoke river has been rather high the past week, but we hope no serious damage was done. Don't forget "Tompkins' Hired Man" by local talent, at the school auditorium Tuesday night. Get tickets early. Miss Reta Johnson is again with Mrs. A. M. Riddick and will be glad to see her friends when they need millinery goods. Mrs. John Coughenour entertain ed at dinner last Friday, March 14, in honor of Miss Margaret Bowers, who is to be married on April 23rd. The large water tank at the Scot land Neck hotel collapsed Thursday night of last week and the noise from the crash was heard some dis tance and created some little excite ment among the guests cf the hotel. We note with pleesure that Dr. J. A. Collins, of Enfield, has been re appointed a member of the county board of education. Dr. Collins has served on the board of education for a number of years and looks well after the interests of the schools. The Methodist Sunday school will give an Easter entertainment at the church Sunday night and a collection will be taken for the orphanage. The public is invited to be present and enjoy the exercises by the chil dren, Mr. S. 0. Purvis called at our office Saturday to settle his subscrip tion to The Commonwealth for the next twelve months and in doing so remarked that he had been a sub scriber to the paper for twenty-one years. 1 his is the kind of subscrib ers that we appreciate most. Miss Mary Anthony died at the home of her brother, Mr. Pay ton Anthony, in Greenville, on Saturday, the 8th., inst, after a short illness. Her remains were brought to Ham ilton for burial. Miss Mary was well known to many of the people of Scotland Neck, being a sister of Mrs. T. H. Pritchard, formerly of this town, but now of Swansboro. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. The Coming, Going and Whereabouts of Our People and Other f oiks. Married Fifty Yaars. On March 24th, if Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Joyner live to see it, will be the anniversary of their golden wed ding. Owing to the extreme feeble health of the bride, it has been de cided best not to attempt to cele brate this occasion. However, Mr. and Mrs. Joyner wish all of their friends, old and young, the same prosperity and happiness which they have enjoyed. Mrs. I. N. Minshew left Saturday for Dunn to visit relatives. Capt. James G. Elmore, of Nor folk, was here Monday night. Miss Carrie Alexander, of Norfolk, visited Mrs. G. Lamb the past week. Mr. J. C. Kelly, of Roanoke Ra pids, was her Sunday and a part of Monday. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Ruffin, of Farmville, are here visining Mrs. R. H. Gray. Miss Carrie Lassiter, of Suffolk, Va., is visiting at the home of Mrs. C. A. Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. L. Ward, of Tarboro, were here from Saturday until Monday. Mr. Gordon James, of Buie's Creek Academy, was here with rela tives and friends Sunday. Mr. Paul Q. Bryan, of Oxford, is here on a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Bryan. Mrs. Chas. J. Shields went to Macon Monday to be present at the marriage of a lady friend. Mr. Chas. A. Page was called to Phoenix since our last issue on ac count of the illness of his mother. Mr. Charlie Dunn, of Norfolk, spent several days of last week here with his mother, Mrs. Bettie Dunn. Mr. C. A. Jones spent several days last week in Richmond and in Ports mouth, Va., with his mother, Mrs. M. P. Alston. Miss Mary Woodward, who has been here some tine on a visit to friends, returned to her home in Norfolk Monday. Mrs. Wiswall and Mrs. J. S. Mc Rae, and son, John, of Maxton, re lurned home Monday after a visit to Mrs. R. C. Josey. Mrs. Carl Lawrence, of Murfrees boro, spent several days here last week with her father, Mr. A. F. Hancock, and ether relatives. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Austin return ed home Monday, Mr. Austin from Asheville and Mrs. Austin from a visit to her people ct Waxhaw. Mrs. Mary E. Gray and daughter , Miss Fannie, returned home Monday morning after spending several days with relatives in Rocky Mouftt. Messrs. F. P. Shields, G. Hoffman, J. Harper Alexander, Jr., and Dr. R. M. Johnson spent Tuesday in Tar boro on business, making the trip in an automobile. Mrs. Mittie Hassell was ca Norfolk Wednesday of last week to attend the burial of her brother, J. E. Davenport, who died rather sud denly Tuesday night. Elder and Mrs. A. J. Moore, of Whi takers, were the guests of their son, Mr. O. J. The opening base ball game of the high school for this season will be played Easter Monday, the 24th, on t!ie local diamond with the strong Tarboro hisrh school team. The home team has gone to considerable expense to get this game and it will be necessary for them to have a good attendance in order to keep out of the hole. 11 this game is a success, financially, there will be more arranged right away. So if the people of the town want the high school to have a ball team this spring let them show it by going out to this game and helping the boys win financially as well as win the game. Wimberley, of Battleboro, and Miss Nina Wells, of Richmond, Va., Mrs. A. P. Kitchin entertained a few friends at her home on Main street, Wednesday evening, March 10th. Mr. W. H. McDowell won the prize in the progressive rook con test and the "booby" prize was awarded Mr. L. H. Kitchin. Mrs. Wimberley and Miss Wells made the evening especially pleasant by the music rendered Refreshments were served in a very dainty style.
