IIAUBY, EI:tor and Proprietor. .Entered at the postofHce at Scotland Neck, N. C, as Second-Class Matter. Thursday, March 27, 1913. Capt. O. II. Smith, the man who designed the first Confederate Hag, passed to his reward at his norne in Henderson March 3rd. Hon. Champ Clark will continue as Speaker of the House and Oscar W. Underwood chairman of the Ways and Means committee. We note that Lincoln county voted a bond issue of $200,000 for good roads one day last week. This was their second effort to issue bonds. President Wilson threw a bomb in the camp of the office seekers when he said he would not give them a hearing, unless he sends for them. His plan is to have each applicant for effice file his application with the department under which be will work. This relieves the president of a great deal of worry and annoy anee and we don't blame him. Senator John W. Kern, of Indiana, has been chosen Senate leader in place of Senator Martin, of Virginia. Senator Clark, of Arkansas, was elected president pro tempore, of the Senate, defeating Senator Bacon, of Georgia. This election created quite a stir among Bacon's friends, because it was thought that he would have no oppositirn. WTe doubt seriously if the ligisla ture made sufficient provision to meet the deficit in the State treasu ry of nearly a million dollars. There was a bill introduced for a reassess ment of all property and Gov. Craig sent a special message to the legisla ture on this subject urging them to take steps to meet the needs of the treasury, bat they failed to meet the needs. And now what is to be done? SciS3 Fine Bur Clove?. Mr. Geo. R. Bennett, of Enfield, demonstration agent for the eastern end of Halifax county under th: North Carolina depr. Lment of agri culture, was here sr,: e rays ago and was exhibiting a buiicii l bur clov er which he obtained from the farm of E. A. Liiloy, near Spring Hill. Mr. Bennett said the clover was seeded four years ago, and there was an abundant growth yet on the land. Upon the roots of the bunch of clover Mr. Bennett was exhibit ing there were numerous nodules that contained nitrogen taken from the air, and Mr. Bennett declared that this abundant growth upon Mr. Lilley's farm forever eliminated any idea that clover and other vari eties of slock food cannot be suc cessfully raised in this section of the State. ILe said besides this splendid growth of bur clover upon Mr. Lil ley's farm there are many acres of the finest crimson clover he had ever seen anywhere. Mr. Bennett seemed to be greatly interested in what he found on thissplended farm and talked most interestingly to the writer about the same. Onk City Items. Oak City, N. C, March 2.",.
