Halifax, Jan. 1. Again the thin ray line of noble and heroic con federates has been broken and an other has answered the final roll-call. On the morning of December 25th. at 7:30 o'clock Mr. Sam P. Brown was summoned to meet his Saviour face to face. llU illness was very short, on Mondav he was down town talking to friends and seemed to be impressed-with the Christmas spirit. Tuesday mornir g he was not well but on Wednesday morning said he felt some better, was taken worse during the day and passed off quietly Thursday morning. Mr, Brown was among the first volunteers when the war broke out between the Morth and South, belonged to Co. 3. 24th N. C. Regiment under Capt. Stu'ggins, and General Ransom. His sie when he joined the crmy was 26. His captain was so well pleased with him and so impressed vith hi." good behaviour and excel lent deportment that he was con stantly sending him out for special daiy with a s?qu.?.d of men. lie was ma.de a sergeanc in his company af ter seeing service. He was fortu nate enough to re tarn the esteem of his superiors and. was admired by those who fought with him side by side. There is no record cf the fact that he tried to shriek one single re sponsible duty. He was cf genia: disposition, quick and ready wit, ever looking on the bright side of tihngs and finding the best in men, over-looking the worst. There was always a tender spot in his heart for his comrades, this feeling being kept alive as long as he lived for those who s-urvived that brave strug gle of 'Gl-65. Mr. Brown was wounded in the seven days fight ar'.md Pchmorol and was out of c amission for two or three months, wiih this exception he was in ser vice 'till the day before Lee surren- dsred, he than being captured by 1 1 - enemy. He made the state me it a few days before he died that th re v.r ir onb o-c 1 left beside him self who fought in the same com pa iy, this one being Mr. George Hammill. Mr. Brown was married i 1 August 18t5 to Miss Mary Louise w.ioa 01 fiHiiiax county, trom this union there were eleven children , a' I living except three girls. He was a little less than 79 years old at his death, having been born in March. 1S35. His father was John Bro.vn, and his mothers' maiden mime was Miss Jeannette Ives, both of Halifax county. Mr. Brown lived in the town of Weld on for a good many years of his later life and only after all the children were married could he be induced to break up housekeeping an! together with his noble, corn ea don of neaidy fifty years made hi 4 home with his daughter, Mrs. W. F. Coppedge, at Halifax. Those surviving beside his widow are as follows: Robert L., of Vaughns; Sam T., of Troy; John F., of S?lma; Mrs. T. G. King, Rocky Mount; Mrs. E. R, Creel. Aberdeen; Mrs. S. T. Carrin, South Boston, Va., Mrs. W. F. Coppedge, Halifax; Mrs. G. H. Moore, of Pittsburg, Pa. The re mains were placed away in the family burying ground five miles west of this place on December 28th, Rev. J. G. Blalock of Weldon per forming the last sad rites. A long useful life well spent in service to his fellow man, in providing for hi; family, an 1 in serving his God. Blis elngs to his memory. W. F. We are the richest country in -he world with resources far in excess of ti o-e of any other people. Although prosperous, we are not half so pros perous as we might be with a wiser use of the resources we possess. The address of President Elbert H Gary at a recent meeting of the American Iron and Sieele Institute was a clarion call for the country to "wake up to a realization of the fact that we are in competition with other countries, who by every means in their power are striving for supremacy; thai it is not diffi cult for us, hy good management, to reach the greatest measure of suc cess in competition with other Na tions of the world, and yet that it is just as easy to fail if our vision is narrow or if we act without due re gard to the results." The total wealth or the United States exc.:eds that of England by $50,000, and is twice as great as that of France or Germany. The per capita wealth in the United S ates is exceeded in France alone nod by only $10. The annum: of mo -my in the Unittd States is $1,009,000,000 raoi e than in the United Kingdom and Germany combined. In the pro duction of corn, wheat, oats, to bacco, cotton, petroleum, pig iron, steel and copper we lead the world. The balance of the trade between this country and all oi her countries for the fiscal year ended June 30 amounted to $653,000,000 in our fa vor. Nowhere else is laboc ro well paid or the standard of living so high as with us. That the United States still offers opportunities no presented bv any other ecu r.trv is abundantly evidence ! bv the con stant stream of immisra! i-.n to out shores. With this background of nations1 wealth, "Why." asked .lodge Gai y, does business halt?" Why should prosperity be so frequently and se riously interrupted? Foreign coun tries with lesser resources than ours, and which are straining every nerve to secure commercial supremacy, marvel that there should be the dis position on the part of the muck raker, the press, and even the Gov ernment itself to check the normal and natural progress and prosperity of the country. The apostles of discontent and un rest have overworked th ir calling. The disposition to look upon b;g ami successful enterprises per se of wrong-doing has been too long countenanced. With this sort of at tack, persistently kept up, it is not surprising. that confidence hss been shaken and that foreigners are loath to put their money into American) enterprises.
