ARCHIE ALLSBROOK DROWNED SUNDAY While Bathing in RoanoKe River at Hill's Ferry. BODY WAS RECOVERED MONDAY. While in swimming at HiU'fe Fer ry Sunday afternoon with a crowd of Boy Scout companions, Archie Allsbrook, the eldest son of Mr. Land Mrs. Johnson Allsbrook, sudden ly stepped from the shallow water covering the sand bar near the fer ry into the main current of the Roanoke, and after a few moments of frantic struggling with the swift surging stream, went down never to come up again alive. It seems that young Allsbrook with Jimmie Hopkins of this place were some distance from the rest of the young bathers and were making their way to the other part of the crowd, who were frollicing in the water with a canoe, . when the un fortunate boy (who could not swim) suddenly stepped from the sand bar into the deep water. With his first cry for help his swimming mates hurried to him as he was swiftly borne down stream. Lewis Kitchin and Jimmie Lawrence were the first to reach him. Putting their arms abouthim, they were able to hold his head above the water only a few minutes when they became exhaust ed and were compelled to save their own lives to let him go. As these two boys turned the drowning lad aloose to save themselves from a watery grave, David Bryant who was one of the party of swimmers, started to the rescue of Archie; and, would have in all probability saved him but for the fact that after util izing all his effort and strength in quickly reaching him was complete ly exhausted when he neared the drowning boy. With a weak, futile effort Bryant took hold of young Allsbrook andx tried to tow him - "I - ' i. 1 J? T ing m doing tnis tne wouid-De res- cuer found his life imperiled as the ( fastly stragling boy clung to him ; with a death-like grip and pulled J him under several times. After a few minutes struggling with Archie ! David finally released himself from the clutches of the drowning boy to find that his strength was also gone. Then it was the rest of the bathers who had to go into mid-stream and aid Bryant in getting from the mad dened current. Archie, over the protests of his father, met with a bunch of young fellows Sunday afternoon who were bound for the river for a cool dip, and renched Hill's Ferry, which is a mile from Palmyra, about two o'clock, and after the boys were stripped of their clothing plunged in the river where they cavorted around for a few minutes. Young Allsbrook, who had not yet learned how to swim got in a canoe with Jimmie Hopkins and paddled to the Bertie side where they could nioy splashing about in shallow water, while the other boys, who were good swimmers and learned in the ways of the treacherous Roanoke dove about the channel from canoes. As soon as the ill-fated boy went down his last time and was there fore lost from sight of his compan ions, they rushed to Palmyra and telephoned the people of Scotland Neck of the fatal occurrence. In a few minutes there were fully a hun dred people from here and Hobgood at the river bank and in canoes searching and sounding for the body. But it was not , until about four o'clock Monday afternoon that the bodv was recovered near where it went down. Archie, who was the seventeen-year-old son of Mr. Johnson Alls brook, was employed in the grocery firm of his kinsman, Mr,. J. W. Allsbrook, where he had been work ing for several months as carrier boy and clerk. He had lately be come a member of the Scotland Neck Boy Scouts, and wTas popular throughout the community with the young-and old as a steady working ooy. tie was quiet, unassuming and polite. He was a favorite among the customers of the firm for which he worked on account of his promptness. HEALTH PAST FIFTY Careful diet is of utmost importance to men and women past fifty years of age; it keeps up their strength, and the oil food in Scott's Emulsion is a nourishing food, a curative medicine and a sustaining tonic to regulate the functions. It contains the medicinal fats of pure cod liver oil and science proves that they furnish twice as much energy as other foods then too, it creates pure blood, sharpens the appetite, relieves rheuma tism i strengthens the body and alleviates the ailments due to declining years. Scott's is free from wines, alcohol or harmful drugs. Beware of substitutes. snorewara: pui instead oi succea-;-niaeir, The Irish Newspaper Man. Whatever is in the Irish mind is available on the instant, so that the Irish rarely fail to do themselves justice. They keep their best foot ' forward, and if they fall, they light on their feet. They succeed as law yers, not only because they can play upon the jury, but because they are quick in thrust and parry. They abound in newspaper offices, because their imagination enables them to keep '"'in touch" with the public mind. The Irishman rarely attains the thorough knowledge of the Ger man physician; but he makes his mark as surgeon because he is quick to perceive and to decide when the knife discloses a grave, unsuspected condition. The Irishman accepts the Erse proverb: "Contention is better than loneliness." "His nature goes out to the other fellow all the time," declares a wise priest. The lodge meeting of a Hibernian benevolent association is a revelation of kind ness and delicacy of feeling in rough, toil-worn men. A great criminal lawyer tells me that if he has a des perate case to defend, he keeps the cold-blooded Swede off the jury and gets an Irishman on, especially one who has been "in trouble." "If you want money to advance a prin ciple," says an observer, "go among the Scandinavians; if you want mon ey to relieve suffering, go among the Irish." Prof. E. A. Ross, in April Century. Pretty Glove Case. To make a pretty glove case take a long, narrow box and pad it care fully inside and out. Arrange the Madding so that it is quite flat round the upper part of the outside of the box in order that the lid can be slipped on easily. Then pad the lid on the outside only? The cotton wool that is plaaed qn the inside of the box should be sprinkled with sachet powder. Next covdr the box tightly with sr-d-'eVrr t'S fix the outer cover of white gatin Before placin? th; latter oyer the iid however embroider a large lovers' knot in the center of the ma- terial. Then work an initial in the middle of each bow. A knot in pale pink or old rose color, with the initials in a deeper shade, would be very effective. Another idea would be to have the knot in pale blue silk with silver thread initials. This would look ex ceedingly handsome when finished r COMRADESHIP BY ELBERT A Man Alone Will Accomplish Little ; All Relationship A MAN alone will accom plish little. All of his thoughts and acts have a direct relationship to others. Men succeed only as they work together. ' Without companionship am bition droops, courage flags, reason totters, ambition van ishes and the man dies. Nature puts a quick limit on the horrors of solitary confine ment she unhinges the reason of the prisoner, and he address es comrades who have no ex istance save in his fevered im agination. The man who does useful work is in direct communica-. tion with other people he works for others, and the thought that he is doing some thing for somebody sustains him. The "lifer" is always sus tained by the hope of pardon as long as he lives he is a part of the wfcole, and should it ever come to him that his case is a hopeless one and he is alone, his usefulness is gone. Soldiers who are cowards by themselves often fight bravely when placed on the firing line with others. We succeed only as we, band ovrselves with others. Each man is a molecule that is need ed to make up the all. Every man - who has accom plished much in the world of art, literature, a-xhitecture, finance, has been aided by a good woman. A man alone is only half a man. , Men and wornen inspire each other. They put each other on 1 their good behavior. Women alone are silly. MUNICIPAL BUILDING NEARING COMPLETION. To Contain Offices for Mayor and Other Town Officials. ALSO MODERN PICTURE THEATRE The Municipal Building which has been under construction for the past few weeks under the supervision of Mr. J. H. Mauney, local contractor, is nearing completion and the first of July expects to find the building furnished and ready for rentals which have leases on the stores and offices. The building which is a continuation of the postoffice build ing will be two stories high with floor dimensions of fifty-four by sixty feet. On the ground floor will be a moving picture show, the name of which will be The Gem, and next to this will be a modern sanitary tonsorial parlor and manicuring department. To the rear of this will be a paragon pool parlor con ducted by Mr. J. C. Smith, the pro prietor of the Model Barbershop. At a cost of eight thousand dol lars this building will be an attract ive asset to Scotland Neck's many new buildings. The Mayor's office which will be on the second floor of this structure will be fitted up with furniture becoming the dignitary of such an office. Running water, steam heat and electric lights will be among the modern conveniences Mr. A. Paul Kitchin the owner of the building has provided for his rentals. Appreciation Leagues. If you see a kind act done, a bene ficial service performed, don't keep it a secret. Tell some one, and tell it where it will do the most good. That is the sum and substance of Talosophy. Appreciation leagues have already been formed in many of the larger cities of the country, and there is need of them in ti-.ns and villages throughout the land: Become an appreciator! If an electric car conductor always calls the names of streets tell the i division superintendent. If a clerk is courteous to fussy customers tell the merchant. If the letter carrier covers his route promptly and well tell the postmaster. Boost whenever you can, for the knocks in this world will always be plenty enough. Exchange. HUBBARD of His Thoughts and Acts Have a Direct to Others A group of men alone are rogues. There is nothing more divine than the comradship of a man and a woman mentally mated. They double their joys and halve their sorrows by sharing them. Moving at a like pace, they move forward hand in hand. Under these conditions eve rything is beautiful to them. Even hardships take on a new view, and become opportuni ties for heroic endurance. Only lovers laugh. Others grin and bear it, and some there be who bear it, but are unable to grin. Joyous and jaunty labor is beautiful, but labor sullen and sour eats out the heart, slants the brow, and puts lime in the bones. More than that, mel ancholia is contagious. I have seen fear pollute a factory and put a business to the bad. A little love and laughter would have saved it. When you relax and laugh you eliminate dead tissue. When you clutch and hold you harbor toxins. N - Yes, men need women and women need men. To mate and be loyal to your mate is divine also it is natur al. For that which is natural is divine. The divine manifests itself through man. Promiscuity is perversion, and its end is dissolution, dis ease, death and the grave. That which God has joined together no man can put asun der. That which God has not join ed man should not try to rivet together. Dawsons Items. Dawsons, June 9. Dawsons peo ple attended the commencement at Spring Hill Monday night. After this service a dinner, to which all were invited, was served. At 3 o'clock the children's service began. The most important features of this service were the recitations by the infant class of a large portion of the Church Catechism. The first Bible class recited the 13th chapter of I Corinthians, and the Senior class, the 19th Psalm. The ease and ac curacy with which all these recita tions were made was a credit both to the children and to their teacher, Miss Hattie Barlow. Mr. R. G. Kittrell made the annual address. "Honor Thy Father and Thy Moth er." was his subject, and on closing, he had given to each one some new conceDtion oi their duty and some higher ideal to live up to.
