THE COMMONWEALTH. PUBISHED EVERY THURSDAY. L.' MILLS KITCHIN, Editor and Proprietor. .Entered at the postoffice at Scotland Neck, N. C. , as Second-Clas3 Matter. Thursday, January 12, 1915. THE GOSSIP VENDERS. We have at last arrived at a solu tion whereby the village gossip ven ders may be ascertained without undue inquisitiveness. Go to your favorite cinematograph theatre and pick out a seat of vantage. If a female, either with or without an escort of the opposite sex, flops down in front of you without re moving her view-obstructing head gear you may be safe in putting her down in the gossip column. This has been tried and found to be true in nine and nine-tenth cases out of a possible ten. The reason we know is that hav ing been the victim of such acre covering hats on several occasions, there was nothing left to do but graft yourself to the chair and hear the dlsparagment of Mrs. Person's clothes and how utterly lacking in her ability to wear them at an ad vantage. Then when the patrons of the picture couse are fairly guffaw ing at something taking place on the screen "Going off to school has certainly helped Gwendolyn, but I declare I never have seen such short skirts on a gi own girl before; I think it is scandalous how some mothers allow their daughters to pack the pavement " And then as the bauble of voices in the audience are raised in conjecture of how the picture will turn out during the brief respite for the operator to put on part two, we hear above the din the fiendess saying, "And his mother is such a sweet woman. I don't see how he became infatuated with a woman of her kind. It's the talk of the town, the way he carried on with her at the beach this summer, even my boy William says he can't under stand why he wants to humiliate h's family with his ardent attentions to that woman " ""Ladies and gentlemen," bellows the manager from the rear, "the serial story, 'The Silken Snake', will be shown here to-morrow night. I have just received a telegram from the film company saying that "The Silken Snake' has been held up in transit, but will arrive in the morn ing without fail. I am very sorry that we were unfortunate in not be ing able to show this marvelous pic ture to-night. In addition" But just then the parties in front of us" got up with, "Just like 'em; you can't ever put any dependence in what these moving picture peo ple say. It's all a cheat to get one here to see a picture when they knew all the time that it wasn't coming." Seeing our chance to shake loose from the spell of local scandal, we oozed out for the nearest coaling station for our nightly chocolate milk. Prepare For Bigger Things. Mr. Editor: There has been more or less spasmodic discussion relative to the organization of some form of commercial club, board of trade or chamber cf commerce. It appears to me that we are sadly in need of such an organization. At any time 'lis only through organized, system atic effort that -anything is accom plished, but in times of stres?, as is the period through which we are now passing, enthusirstic, persistant effort is all the more necessary to accomplish results. We all are, or should be, interest ed in the growth and upbuilding of our town, but as it is now, there is no organized effort to accomplish the things we desire and see the need of, principally in improvement of streets, the necessity of numbers of small industries, and more people. We can get all these things if we go after them with a will. You may argue that the present i3 no time to inaugurate such a movement. D'.d you ever attend a c'ose game cf ball? When things looked bluest for your team, did you sit still and hold your hands and watch them lose? You bet you didn't. You rooted with all the power of your lungs. Well, now is the time to root and root hard for your good old town. I think it was General. N. B. For rest, the Confederate general, who, when asked how he always managed to win, said, "When I feel that I am getting licked I just begin to fight, for the other fellow might be feeling the same way." Let's get together now, form a live organization and show the State that we are not licked, and when the present depression is over let us be in shape to reap our harvest in busi ness, industry and people. Norfleet S. Smith. Loses Pieces of Bone Happy Now In Avery, Texas, lives Ira Davis, who suffered for years with a chron ic sore on his foot which doctors ad vised would never heal without scraping the bone. Mr. Davis states that one' box of Allen's Uleerine Salve drew out several r.ieees cf bone and lots of pus, and the sore healed up completely. . Allen's Uleerine Salve is one of the oldest remedies in America and since 1869 has been known as the only salve powerful enough to reach chronic uleera. and old sores of long standing. Because it is so powerful it often hea's burns and scalds with out a s;:ar in a remarkably short time. Allen's Uleerine Salve heals from the bottom up and draws out the poisons. If applied on new cuts and sores it heals in one-third the time that common salves and liniments take. Sold by E. T. Whitehead Co., and other leading druggists. Scotland Neck is fortunate in get ting the service that it does from the municipal light plant and the local telephone exchange. These two agencies twenty years ago were a dream; but, conld we do without them to-day? Ten years from now it will be beyond our conception to understand how we ever got along without waterworks and other im provements as long as we did. The Commonwealth would be glad to publish in its columns opinions from representative citizens of Scot land Neck on the feasibility of an election to float bonds to pave the city streets and to install water and drainage system. The election, fol lowing a bill through the legislature giving the municipality the right to call an election, could be held any time thereafter. After this the making of the contract for the im provement project might be defer red until conditions warranted such such an improvement.
