With more than a million of her best work men drawn to the colors, a re dedication to labor is imperative on the part of that class that from one cause and another has heretofore dropped out of the ranks of the workers, j It is all right to say to the farmer, "You must produce greater crops," but if he hasn t the force to manage his teams and implements we are asking of him an impossibility. And so in all other lines. There is but one answer: All who can, must WORK, not be cause they need the proceeds of their labor, but because the coun try NEEDS THEIR LABOR. There is absolutely no room in this country now for the men who can work, yet who will not. Down with the work slacker! Pig The advance in price of iron is not surprising, considering the me. Russia has one advantage in those women soldiers they can't run as fast as the men. President Wilson seems to in sinuate that the Kaiser is "an other." A&y number of married slack ers aa?e now engaged in a frenied effort to avoid the divorce cowgt. Sour Stomach. Eat slowly, matsicate your food thor oughly, abstain from meat for a few days and in most cases the sour stom ach will disappear. If it does not, take one of Chamberlain's Tablets immed iately after supper. Bed meats are most likely to cause sour stomach and you- may find it best to cut them out. RED CROSS MEETING. The regular meeting f the local Red Cross, will be held in the Red Cross j rooms, over the Scotland Neck Bank, at four o'clock promptly this aftern oon. There is considerable work to be at tended to, and those ladies who have work out are requested to be sure and bring it in, whether finished or not. . The bachelor may contend for a right to his own opinion, but the married man knows it is a ques tion of courage, with him. W.t're perfectly willing to makef it a meatless day, and a wheatless day, but we draw the line at an catless day. Tlig vegetarian is the only fel low who doesn't have a fit when he rfliads the quotations in the meat, market. Mrs. Smith Recommends Iain's Tablets. Chamber- "I have had more or less stomach trouble for eight or ten years," writes Mrs. G. H. Smith, Brewerton, N. Y. "When suffering from attacks of in digestion and heaviness after eating, one or two of Chamberlain's Tablets have always relieved me. I have also found them a pleasant laxative.! These tablets tone up the stomach and enable it to perform its functions nat urally. If you are troubled withl indi: gestion give them a trial, get well and fstay well. JOHN POHATTAN WARE. These are the days when thej Following his wife's demise by al dealer in ice and coal gets all mixed up in an effort to determ ine which product to push the hardgfc. The deceased gentleman Was born on March 30, 1832, at Oxford, North Caro lina, where he lived until he reached the age of manhood when he went to Nashville, Tenn., at which place he en listed in the army. He served through out the war and was discharged, when peace was declared, at Fort Donald son. After the war he engaged in railroad building, principally building bridges and trestles for railroads, in Alabama, and in Montgomery, the capital of that state he met his wife, ; Miss Martha Louise Black. In 1879 he moved back to North Carolina and settled in Scotland Neck wit? ..is wife and thre$ children born in Alabama. And in connection with it all there is one significant fact that must strike,' us forcefully when we come to consider it. Just one instance: Peoria, 111., a lar9 whisky center, announces that the 1,500 or 2,000 men thrown out by the closing of the distil leries will be taken care of at onc in oiktr lines o work that she has need for the services of every one of them.
