This we are failing to do. Our government is putting forth most herculean efforts to pilot the ship of state through the troubled waters, but they are hampered on j every hand by those who, from a self interest that exceeds their loyalty, persist in throwing every obstruction possible in the way. This should not be, must not be. The lives of the thousands of young men who have responded to their country's call must not be jeopardized by the Judas at home. i It is time that the great loyal ma jority demand that the voice of the objector and obstructionist be silenced if not one way, then an other. There is something crooked about a "conscience" that per sists in arraying itself against the national conscience. Such a "conscience" is the creature of many and varied influences, none of which make for the best inter ests o American life. It is time the reactionary were silenced. The people have spoken, and their verdict should be final. The traitor to his country should feel that country's displeasure in no light degree. Justice is reputed to be blind, but sometimes strikes so truly we are inclined to credit her with Argus eyes. For some time now the govern ment has been beseiged to include eggs in the soldiers' rations, and it now comes to light that the parties so intensely interested in the boys are the cold storage men. ! Accustomed as they are to "re tiring" large quantities of eggs during the laying season, this year they miscalculated the sup- Again it is necessary to call atten tion to the fact that traffic rules are becoming slack, many disregarding them altogether to the detriment and danger of the public. The proper authorities will be au thorized to enforce the traffic ordi nances henceforth and this notice is given that all may be advised that the same must be observed. The town ordinances call for driving on the right side of the road, corners to be turned round the guide posts; cars to be parked-with front wheel to the sidewalk and at an angle of 45 degrees, and lights both front and rear when not parked under the street lights; no cars to be left on the street through the night. The state regulations call for a mod erate speed through town, and a lic ense displayed on all cars. The boy scouts who did such valliant service in, the summer will again di rect traffic on Saturday, .which they do under the direction of the town of ficials, with instructions to take the names of all those who disregard the directions. This is not true of people living in this good town, for we swell with pride as we write, opposite our names, ' ' SCOTLAND NECK. ' 1 It isn't even necessary to follow it with "N. C," for Scotland Neck has a reputation that is more than State-wide. No town of its size can boast of more intelligence, more thrift or better citizen ship.
