Tuesday July 23, 1918 , "When the government takes con trol of the teleraphg, telephone, and cables, will there be more or less wire-pulling than at present? O .No more can the ladies buy "pattern hats" at the end of the season. They're usinsr "Dietur ? 7 ed" hats now instead of "picture hats, a picture serving the pur pose and being more economical O lhe state or county even the nation that confines its criminals whithin prison walls is itself jmiltv of ermiiiial practice. Convict labor rightly applied would in the next generation give the United States the greatest system of pub lie highways the world has ever known. Put all convicts to work on the roads. That way they can expiate their offenses and be of some real service to their country. -O WHO IS THE SLACKER? O The term "slacker" has and, justly become one of great re proach. The slacker now stands before his fellow men in his true color yellow. He is the man up on whom his countrv has confer-! red benefits, but whose craven soml refuses to accord service when in turn his country needs his services. "We have and it is right that it -should )e so very little sympa thy to waste on the military slack or. Put at the same time we wish to insist that he is by no means the only slacker. "We. ourselves, pride mirselves on our complete loyalty, never realizing in our blindness that in ma.iy ways we are as great slack ers as any. Our government lias outlined many ways in which it expects the cooperation of the people. It ex pects every individual to contri bute his or her help in all these lines. Tf this help is not forth coming, the delinquents are as tru ly slackers as is the man who seeks to evade the army or the Lib erty Loan. Let us see what some of the services do consist 'of. First, conservation of time, la bor and materials. What of the man or woman, either who wil fully squanders time and misap plies labor? When the united ex ertions of ALL are needed, can even one sulk and hang back, and the effect not be felt on the mass ? Then multiply that one by hun dreds, and by thousands, and how long before the objective is lost from inactivity? Then there is the matter of needless expenditures. War ne cessities have already practically eliminated many of the luxuries of life, ard will yet eliminate many more. But many still exist and are still indulged in, frequent ly to the great hurt of our cause. The purchase and use of luxuries I involves not only a misuse of our means, but it also involves a mis use of time, labor and material in the production of the article of luxury. And again are we forced to the conclusion that the indul ger in needless luxury is as surely a slacker as is he who dodges the draft. - Last winter we experienced a serious fuel shortage why? Sim ply from lack of trains to move coal from the mines to the con sumer. The government is con stantly seeking to impress upon us the fact that it needs every en gine and every cjar obtainable, having use for all. Every person who travels on a train takes from the government just that much engine energy and carrying ca pacity. True, the business of life must go on, but what of the pleas ure travel the joy ride? The railroads do not need his money and the government does, and also the transporting power that he snurps for his selfish pleasure. And again we are forced to the conclusion that the aimless joy rider is as truly a slacer as he who would dodge the draft. But why continue the list? There are a thousand wavs in which we can and frequently do,! squander and misapply the mate-l rials and energy of which our be- oved country is just now so ur- i for every man, woman and child of us to sit down and calmly examine our own conscience, hon estly judge of our actions in the ight of the grave duties before each and everv oup of u n.7 hen dare to act as patriotism and devotion to our country's inter-IP CLASSIFIED ADDS nDDnradC3 FOR hand drays.
