King Albert of Belgium cer at Brussels. Much has been said, both in Con gress and out about a "back-to-the-land'" movement for our re turning soldiers, and the plan may be worked out easily enough pro vided of course our soldier bovs favor the idea were it not for the faet that the country has no land of any real value to offer to them. It is all very well to talk in a general way about the fifteen million acres of desert lands which tin Department of Interior claims can he irrigated or the seventv million acres of swamp and over flowed lands which that Depart ment claims can be drained and made profitable. There may also be. as stated by the Secretary of tin Interior, millions of acres of cut-over land, which can be clear ed of stumps, brush, etc., and made suitable for agriculture, but these projects are all matters for the dim and distant future, whereas the disbandment of our army and the making of suitable provisions for the employment of, our return ing soldiers is one which must be dealt with immediately and con sequently, while the country may be justified in incurring the tre mendous expense necessary to make our two hundred million acres or more of desert, swamp, and cut-over lands suitable foi agriculture, the suggestion of ut ilizing. -any of this area (which at present is, ami for years to some will necessarily be utterly uninhab itahle and useless) for the purpose of enticing the liu,, who" make u our present huge armies back to the land, seems to be hardlv Avor thy of the second thought.
