Friday, August 22, 1919- Are you wearied of the mo notony of a hum drum existence? With a good book you may visit the far places of the earth and delve into their histories and secrets. There is no land you may not explore, no depth of learning you may not plumb, no height you may not scale. The lives and passions of the lower earth life, or the higher an. more serene enjoyments of the spiritual all are ours for the taking. LOCAL CUSTOMS. A certain American citizen, 33 years of age, got into the world war without waiting to be drafted. He served three ears with the. Canadian army in Prance, was wounded, and was also badly gassed, like many who were there in the early days before the masks were dependa ble. He was lately discharged, and went to visit relatives in a town in the northern states. While passing through the central part of the city, he was attacked by a gang of toughs, hammered hammered okito unconsciousness, and left on the sidewalk, an in ert heap. He was afterwards picked up by a policeman and taken to the station-house, where his injuries were treated. On returning to conscious ness, he expressed a natural sur prise at the conduct of his as sailants. He was wearing his uniform at the time also his wound stripes, and thought that they would be, at least, a guar antee of safety. He had fought to protect his fellow-countrymen for three years, and had started a considerable time be fore they had thought of partic ipating. So he had expected to be safe on reaching America. It isn't very long since Chi p.ago was telling East St. Louis what a shocking, riotous place that city was. And lately took the same attitude toward Washington- Chicago has told a good many places what they ought to do and be- And perhaps a lot of places are not all that they should become. But they have one redeeming feature. They are not like Chicago. "Scotland Neck, don't try to be a metropolis. Washington is one Chicago is another. It is hard to pick out the ideal that we should copy; there are not many ideal cities. But at all events, we can find places to classify as awful warnings. We do, at least, know what to avoid. THE SILVER TONGUE. A threat is ; generally a warn ing, and the threatened iarty fee'ts ready to resist. Between 1894 and 1914 twenty years ! the . Kaiser talked everlastingly on public occasions about his army, and what he could do with it. Finally,, the world came to believe him and look at him now. Ed Carson announces what he will do to America. Messrs. Dunne and Ryan announce what they will, do to England- Last of all, to China- Japan has always talked about being kind to China. She is talking that way now. And Japan is about the only world power at present that is not wearing a black eye. Japan is the only nation that professes ja consistent affection for every body and gets more, without paying for it, than anybody' else. Most of us are Christians, talk rough, and get bloody noses. Japan is a heathen, talks kindly and cashes in. Even when you want to be honest, you may as well talk kindly. It may save-you a black eye, even if you don-'t want to pick a pocket. You may as well act like a Christian, since you say you are one. Politeness pays, even when you are a heathen ; ask Japan she knows. Cure for Dy sentry. "While I was in AshlanJ, Kansas, a gentleman overheard me speaking of Chamberlain's Colie and Diarrhoea Remedy, " writes William Whitelaw, of Des Moines, Iowa. "He told me in de tail of what it had done for his daily, but more especially his daughter who was lying at the point of death with a violent attack of dysentery, all had been given up by the family physican. Home of his neighbors advised him to frive Chamberlain's Colie ar Diarrhoea Remedy, which he did, and fully be fax county, was forced by public senti lieves that by doing so saved the life of his child. He stated that he had also used this remedy himself with equaly gratifying results. " Why People Buy Rat-Snap in Prefer- ence to Rat Poison (1) RAT-SNAP absolutely kills rats and mice.
