Tuesday, August 26, 1919. No, the advance in cost has not affected the demand for automo biles. It is still possible to mort gage a home. It is easier to catch a chick than a full grown rooster. Bolshevism should be skotched in its incip-iency. About the best way for Europe to prevent famine is to quit talk ing and go to work. The armistice occurred last November. This continual reading ofj the high cast of living is becoming about as painful as paying the bill. We might, however, circumvent the $30 shoes by staving winter off a year or two. Our happiest days were when we toddled around in our bare feet- Don 't let the shrinkage of) the dollar prevent your paying up that delinquent subscription you owe us.' It still goes at par in this ishop. life as his royal father. But he comes fairly close to it. H we want a 'typical representative of the British people, we would, perhaps, prefer Lloyd George- And we should show sound sense in demanding it; but Lloyd would probably stay at home. He is needed in England just now, and; the Prince isn't. The Prince never was, and prob ably never will be. He is one of the least necessary persons, as an individual, in the British Em pire, though, no doubt a thor oughly . companionable, unaffect ed, healthy-minded, young man. But Great Britain is passing through acutely critical times, and Lloyd George is needed there every minute of every day. So is every other man who has the quality of leadership, and a con science to regulate it. When one nation pays a eom plimentary visit to another, it generally uses as a representa tive some one who is merely a symbol. It is economy to do so. And he is received by a symbol representing the visited nation - i the recipient of the compliment. And, so the courtesies are ex changed. The symbolical visitant never enters the humble dwell ings of the people visited, and sees next to nothing of, their na tional life; therefore it "hardly matters who he is- President Wilsan isaw nothing of the French and British when he was in Europe, although he did some work there. And the compliments have been passed. As far as official courtesies go, a -couple of postal cards would do just as well. Why I Put Up With Rats for Years' Writes N. Windsor Fanneo. THE YOUNG MAN WHO SPEAKS WITH THE MOST FRIENDLY VOICE AND WHO IS THE MOST 'FREQUENT VISITOR AT THE HOMES OF YOUR DISTRICT IS In a spirit intended for. official cordiality, the British government sends the Prince of Wales to the United States. This fact is worry ing certain precisions in interna tional etiquette over here. They contend that the British are sending the wrong representa - tive. As Great Britain claims to be a 'democracy, it is her duty to send us some one who represents the democratic idea. And this they hold, a prince can hardly do. If he doesn't represent mon archy, what d-oes he represent? They even complain that, to a republic like ours, any one with a royal title is "persona non grata" as an official representa tive. A kingdom or archduchy might recognize him, but flor us to do so is almoist a surrender of principle. "Well, in theory this is very sound reasoning- The Prince of Wales is less qualified to repre sent the bulk. of the British peo ple thian any one whom they coulc( have selected.
