The majority in the convention must remember that it is acting for the whole party and not for itself alone, and that its pre liminary triumph must be put to profit in. that spirit if it is to inure to the "general good. No body of Democrats should be loft with rea sonable grounds for feeling after the convention has closed its labors, as many Eepublicana felt after the adf journmeut of the Bochester Oonven tion, that those who compose it have been unjustly and oontumeliousiy treated The bad temper and inso lence of the majority at Rochester should serve as a warning at Albany. Nor should the work of the conven tion be done in any spirit of careless security. The apparent dissensions and weakness of the Republican party seem to have led a number of ambitious but comparatirely obscure persons to believe that a Democratic nomination this year will be tanta mount to an election, and they are consequently straining every nerve to get into public life with the eclat of a victory. It is not by any means so certain either as we could wish it to be that other persons over whom a kindly cloud of temporary obscur ity has rested, veiling unpleasant as sociations with their names from the public gaze, may not be tempted into trying to seize upon what they sup pose to be the moment of a foregone party victory for seeking a personal vindication. The convention should keep itselt clear of both classes: of the former "because thty are not well enough known; of the tatter because they are too well known. To win the" Legislature, -without which all els is a barren victory, a determined and united effort under the most fa vorable possible a usplccs will be nec essary It is absolutely certain that. Senator Conklinj. whose whole f u lure career depem Is upon his success in Ihe present c anvass, will make a desperate attempt to carry the State. When he burned fthe bridge behind him in 1-371, castivig out the Liberal liepublic ans, the Tweed ex posure saved hiin from defeat; and now that he has taken the? same told course he will put every blunder of the Democrats to th.'. best use lor himself. His own partisans, who overwheh ningly con rolled the Rochester Con von tion, cling to him with their old zeriJ, and every mistake of the Democrat will t e ul to induce even the Republicans tviio detest his arrogance and deplore his i'cTlly once more to submit to his leadership and move to the polls in obedience to party discipline. Those Republicans who are hesitating to day between a leeling of party alle fiance and the promptings of manly independence can hardly be expected to-coopvratc with the Democracy if th-ev seje the Democracy trifling with tho'conditions. of victory. They will not oreak with their own past party friends to sliaro a Democratic disas ter r. In a word, we have no sham fighL before lis. Unless the Republi can demoralization goes much fur ther than the present signs .indicate thav it will, Ave shall need not only all our own votes, but all the outside assistance we can get, in order to .via the one thing really worth win ning, which is the control of the Legislature. N. Y. World. TJR WASHINGTON LETTER. W.vsnixi.ToN-, D. C. Oct. Gth. The Indians who lately left here, i alter tnree or iour conterences witn Messrs. Hayes and bchurr, received each a little necessary clothing, a trunk and a few dollars in money. These things they will take back with them to their tribes and if the warriors are not territiod at the strength and amazed at the generos ity of a government which can thus loosely pcattcr its wealth, we in our turn will be astonished. Seriously, if there wa3 any occasion lor the coming of these savage?, or any good tias to" be expected from the visit, it was to bo found in the opportunity- oll'ered lor impressing upon them, and through them upon their people, t ho Ttov.-er of the Government. Whether a thirteen dollar trunk -and a slop shop overcoat will do this or not is yet to be seen. Tbe" Government is under greai disod vantages in its intercourse with thoe people. While always making treaties with them, it never is sure that the Indians, even if they wish to observe the treaties, understand their provisions. Their tvishes or ideas can be made known only thro interpreters who, as found in connec tion with the Indian tribes are usu ally iznorant and corrupt. There is not a man of standing in the service ol the Government who knows an Indian language as spoken, from the chatter of a parcel of monkeys. The ex itciiM! of life and treasure entailed by our rotations with them, is go enormous that all concede that tve must rdopt some ' new method of treatment.
