Returns have shown that the election will be close There is a good chance for Mr. Worth, but we believe a better one for Gov. Holdeh. It will be seen that he has carried Randolph, Mr. Worth's own county. We learn that Randolph, was flooded with documents and that Worth ora tors went from Greenboro' to teach the people . their duty to vote against Holden. But it was all of no avail. Alexandria, Va., Nov. 1865. ,A rencontre took place to-day, near the City ho tel, between Dr. Maddox, of Farquier county, and Major Dixon, paymaster of the United States army. Major Dixon received a ball in the side, pene trating the bowels. His speedy death is pro- n0unced certain. Dr. Maddox has nmiself up to the civil authorities. surrenderea From Washington. From the Independent The market has been rather dull, buyers holding off with a view to force a concession in prices, and only tar lnr small amounts, ike stocks of roods are tiznt. rn are, therefore, without much alteration, though without buoyancy. The print market has become quite sluggish. Uoods cannot be replaced at latest quotations; and a very little additional activity will send prices up. Shirtings and sheetings of standard makes are witnout great ac tivity, but stocks are small, and holders are not willing to make sacnnces to force sates on an nnwuiing marten Drills are a little easier. Spool cotton has advanced. In woolens, the demand for fancy caseimeres of the desira ble styles are brisk and buoyant; dark colors and heavy goods are preferred. All medium and low qualities are dull and declining. Delaines are in better supply and meet a fall demand, till the recent rains very insuffici ently met. at steady and good prices. Mixed and black satinets of fine quality are brisk .and firm. Blankets have receded in price a little. Heavy black doeskins, beavers and cloakiuzs generally -are quick and steady Imported goods are firmly held; there is no disposition to give way in price. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre sentatives of the United States of America in Con gress assembled, That whenever any person shall be convicted of the offense described in the act entitled "An Act to prohibit the sale of spirituous liquors and intoxicating drinks, in the Distriet of Columbia, in certain cases," he shall be punished by a fine of twenty dollars or imprisonment in the jail of Washington county, in the District of Co lumbia, for the. period of thirty days.
