The president has approved the death sentence of two citizens of Georgia named Christopher C. Rease and John M: Brown who were convicted by a court martial of the murder of a negro wo man named Nellie West, in Taliaferro county, in that state. The executions are to take place on the first Friday in January, Ex-confederate brigadier-general A E. Jack son, of Virginia, known as Mudwall Jackson, in contradistinction to Stonewall, was pardoned late ly. During the latter part of the war he was prominent in the confederate operations in south western Virginia, in resisting the raids of Gens. Gillem and Stoneman. ' The fenian sisterhood gave a grand ball in buf falo on Tuesday evening, at which there was an immense gathering of people. An Irish flag in the joom bore the inscription : " The Red Cross of England shall fall beneath the Eagle and the Harp." Hon. Henry W. Hilliard, of Alabama, has writ ten a letter supporting the president's reconstruc tion plan, ,and intimating his willingness to assent to negro suffrage hereafter if the freedmen con duct themselves well. The Herald thinks that the merchants of Sa vannah showed more in the matter of establish ing a line of steamers between that city and Liv erpool, as by being the first in the field it would kill off the projected line to Charleston. The Lynchburg yirginian of .Wednesday says that a company has been formed there for the purpose of sinking and working wells in Campbell county, where strong indications have been dis covered of an abundant supply of oil. Col. Miner, late of the federal army, was ar- . rested on Thursday last, at Nashville, Tenn., charged with, stealing mules. Seven very fine mules were found in his possession, on the Hard ing Pike, near that city . By the fall of a building in Berlin, thirty peo ple were lately killed. They were buried on one day with the honors of a public funeral. Large collections of money were made for the surviving relatives. ' The first trial in this country of propelling cars by means of compressed air will be made by the Albany and West Troy R. R. Co. in about four weeks. The machinery for testing the idea is nearly ready. There are registered at Washington upwards of thirty bona Jide candidates for the collectorship of New York. At the rate they are coming in - there will be one hundred by the time congress meets. The national tobacconists' association, in ses sion at New York, asks congress to transfer the internal revenue tax now laid on manufactured articles to leaf tobacco. : The cotton crop of Georgia is this year esti mated at 100,000 bales, worth 825.000.000. It thus pays the planter a fair return for his hired labor, land, capital, teams, stock and supplies. At a large auction sale of coal in New York on Wednesday last, the prices realized were from a dollar to a dollar and seventy-five cents a ton be low previous rater. Mrs. Mumford, the . widow of the Mumford who was hung by Butler, in New Orleans, and her three children, have recently returned to that city in circumstances of great destitution. The Houston Telegraph says that the Texas grape is produced in greater abundance, and will make better wine than the grape of France, Spain, Portugal or Germany. During the late war the city of Georgetown furnished but one hundred mtn to the union army, while 480 were enrolled in the ranks of the rebellion. Through tickets to New Orleans from Memphis, over the Jackson railroad, are sold in Memphis. The connection is complete via Grand Junc tion. ' ' . Dr. Tyng'a church, in New York, is to be re puilt, at an expense of about $120,000. Over $50,000 have already been subscribed for the burpose. The next Wisconsin house of representativs will stand 66 union men to 24 democrats. The senate will consist of 23 unionists and 10 demo crats. . The census of the state of Minnesota has just been published. It shows a population of 250, 000, an increase in five years of 80,000. There are how less than five thousand sick in government hospitals. Eight months ago there were over a hundred thousand. , In New York, on Tuesday, whilst a judge was trying a case of larceny, his coat was stolen from the desk before him. A number of prominent citizens in Richmond are engaged in the project of -establishing an opera house in that city. Gen. Scott, who is escaping from the rigors of a northern winter, awaits at New York the de parture of a steamer for New Orleans. The .war department orders that Camp Doug las, near Chicago, be repaired and kept in good order. Hon. William W. Boyce, of South Uaronna, is about to commence the practice of his profession in Washington. ... t t - ' . AGREEABLY to an order passed at September Term, 1865, of the Court of Pleas and Quar ter Sessions, for the County of New Hanover (a copy of which appears below,) the undersigned, Chairman of said Court, wishes to borrow, upon the faith and credit of the County of New Hano ver, which is pledged for the payment of the same, the sum of FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, for the immediate support of the poor, and to defray other expenses of the County Bonds or Notes, signed by the Chairman and coundersigned by the Clerk, in sums of $500 and $1,000, payable in one and two years, with interest, will be issued. " On motion, in open Court, it is ordered that the Chairman of this Court be authorized and in structed to negotiate a loan not exceeding Five Thousand Dollars, by the issue and sale of Bonds, or in such other manner as he may deem more ju dicious, which money, when realized, the Chair man is directed to pay over to the County Trustee for the support of the Poor of the County, which money shall be disbursed only on the order -of the Chairman of this Court.
