TLt National; Ezpreft Compauy has roue Into openjtion with tine prospects of toccwa, and It win it all times afford us plcaatjre to extend to It all lhe aid In our power.. Wc, however, mention it nov not for the pn'rpose of compllinentinjj its officers, or expressing our hope for IU protjKr Ity, tut to warn the young men of our State that they jean not all obtain employment in it, as they wouil appear to expect. Iu course of time tbo National Express Company will, doubtless, be a larga conecrn, giving employment to many men In different parts of the Union, but that time U not jet! , In the course of the next three mouth therf will be some two hundred appointments ' mad to situations iu It, and sli-rady tber hav been two thousand applications for situations. It is evident that eighteen hundred of these sppll cant must be disappointed, and It is our purpose in making this BUtemcnt to prevent their wasting precious time, and encouraging false hopes. We would advise every young man, no matter what he may consider his chances of success, not to re maia idle in. dependence upon it. nis chances will not be Injured, but, rather wc 'think, Im proved by his finding some other employment. f All experience proves it to be far easier for a man in employment, no matter of what character, pro vided it bo honest, to obtain another situation, thatt for the unemployed to Cud employment of any jdnd. The world will help those who are determined to help themselves, and the best erl denee the world can have of this disposition is to " sec the man at work. . Wc fear the number of applications for situa tions in the National Express Company argues too much idleness for the good of the Common wealth., Every young man cannot, in the present 6tate of the business of the South, obtain work congenial to his tastes and to which perhaps he wa accustomed before the war ; and thousands there arc who were school boy6 when the war bcgun, have 6pent in the army the years that would have been devoted to learning some trade cr useful oc cupation, but still there is work enough, rough It may be, for. every young man In the State, and there is no reasoa why any ehould bo Idle. Thcro Is an universal complaint from Lhe farmers and land owners of Virginia that the negroes will not work, and without reliable white labor theStato must become a desert ; and they are giving Swedes and other foreigners twelve dollars month and their board for ordinary farm Work, which is better compensation than seveuty-flre young men in a hundred obtained for clerical or pther labor In the city In the best of times. It Is very clear that for their own good, and that of -thu commonwealth, our young men must, for the present at least, abandon their aspirations after clerkships and turn their attention to the labors of the field. Rklimond Tunes, GENERAL WADE UAUPT0S. The Washington correspondent of the New York Express gives lhe following notice of General . Wade Hampton: ' General Wade Hampton, who came near being elected Governor of South Carolina, is a grandson of Brigadier General Wads Hampton, of tho Revo lution and war of 1S12, and a son of the late CoL Wade Hampton, so well known throughout the UoiOn to the patrons of the turf. Wade Hampton, the elder, was a native of Prince George County, Md., in the vicinity of Washington, and of obscure parentage. He en tered the Revolutionary army as a wsgou master, and from that humble position gradually arose to the rank of colonel. After the war, he emigrated to South, Carolina and became a planter; and, on the acquisition Of Louisiana, made such invest- -mcnts in that territory on the Mississippi, near New Orleans, as to render him, on his death iu 18G0, one of the richest men in the country. : On the breaking out of the rebellion, the pres ent Wade Hampton was regarded as among the richest men of the Sent. He was originally op posed to secession frankly confessed that ncr nothing In It but ruin to himself and his relatives; but when the war commenced, embarked In it with all the impetuosity of an ardent: nature, aud by hie gallantry and skill as a cavalry offlccr.soon attained the rank of Lieutenant General. Iu per son, he is described as one. of the most strikingly elegant men of the day-very tall, very classical features, and a magnificent black beard altogeth er, quite a cavalier of the Bayard order. His officers and men were devotedly attached to him, not more for his dauntless courage In the field than for those rare qualities of head and heart, for which he Is equally distinguished. At the celebrated conference between Gens. 8nx ma and Johnston, in North Carolina, I am In formed that Wade Hampton, as he sat upon bis horse, formed altogether the most noticeable fea ture of the occasion, and attracted the unwearied admiration of the Federal soldiers present, to whom he had been previously unknown. As one' of them remarked afterward, "ILonrojr looked as if he had stepped, horse and all, out of a canvaa by Titian or Velasquez." i i- . . MODEL LEOISLATIO LX TZjrNXmr. , The Nashville Uanner, October Si, says: A' bill Is before the Legislature for the "relief of the people." One of Its items passed on yes terday In the House by a heavy majority pro vides that where a "loyal" citizen owe a sum of money to another citizen who has aided or served the "rebellion', the amount of losses j sustained by the former during, lhe war may be i taken out of the Judgment of thd latter. -Let us Illustrate.
