THE DAILY DISPATCH. MONDAY MORNING, NOV. JO, 1ST5. ' K'im . The Death of Pretton Kin. The sal death of the Hon. Pkk-Tox i it i i i : excites profounil' regret: wherever he known. He was born in St. Lawrence Coun ty. N. Y., in JfcOtJ, graduate L in Union Col lege, and ailoiitcil the law a a profeioiv. Hi robsequent career i ketrnel f.j tlie New York i;reJM, as follow: - He was for mnnv years t. member of the t ., ... . ' i ongrcxs in ims .-iaic. iroui i-i ii ii , and from 1H4! to 1-V, after which he was' eu-cieu u me 1 nnoi flairs rx.-n.ii in im ii h ervcl until the expiration of hi tenn. Mr. Morgan ueceeliB hiui. "Alienation of mind, or insanity-, was not a new thin in the life of Mr. King. When, in lt3? H, the rebellion broke out iu Canada, he took an active part in exciting jw-ople in St. Lawn n e County to volunteer to go over to , itid . the. xcbcL. . .Many of hi erhonal friends were thus inVoTVrd, by influence in tlie'relx-Ilion, Mime of whom were killed in a mill opposite- Ogd ens burg, and thers'tianv HrteI to IWrtany iiay and Van Dicniaifs Lind. Mr. KingV agency in this, act mi preyed uMin his mind that be Ix-rame in-ane. ami was nt, for quite a long time, to the lunatic ujvlnut in Utica. - . Mr. King was tin MTonnl friend of An drew .IohnMn, nw President, when a I)em c mtic meiiilMT of the. House, and sulsjuent ly when Senator. This ersonal friendship led. to the eloM-st intimacy after Mr. Linc oln died, and Mr. Johnm. no doubt, made him Collector f Xew York to represent him ami his interests here in this great city. Mr. King had many jMTsonal as well as political friends, and bnt few if any enemies. He had n Jyat jniwer of attracting men to him, . which generally made them earnest in sccur ing for him high place. His natural talent t ;h not great, and his success in life, theret fore, was jiiite remarkable. Mr. King was originally a denioi'rat, and a great admirer if the late Silas Wright, for whom he voted for United Stat- Sena tor in X"i7. lb- was alx one of the famous right in Jhe Uniteil States Hon' of Repre scntatives wlio'defealejl the. Hon R. C. Win- 1 throp for SjH-aker. In 1 s-" 1 he h fl the dem ocratir party, on account ol their N lraska Hli-y. :ud joined tbe republican, by whom he was elected to the United Slates Senate in IW, There he served until 10:, since which time he has licen in private" life, until his recent npjointnicnt to the eollectorship of Xcv sYork. The Vahington Intelligencer roys: Since the ac-es-.ion of Andrew Johnson to . the Presidency he has been a large portion "of the time, one of the Executive household, and undoubtedly held those intimate and "confidential relations with the President which were initiated long years since by chsc association in Congressional life. Mr. King was once a victim of insanity, and there is not a shadow of doubt that the exactions, tcrplc.ities. anxieties, lalmrs and responsi bilities of the notorious custom house at New York again brought on that awful form of disease which lias precipitated his tragic nd. Tin- Secretary of the Treasury has directed C. P. Clinch, assistant collector, to rill Mr. King's position as collector of the ort of New York, until otherwise ordered. The TriiiN of a Confederate Journal. The Meinjhis .l'x-. once more issued from the city of its original location, gives tin; following humorous account tf its peril ous travels during the war : TlIE MEMPIIlS-liltKNEn.-J.C KSOX-ATLX- ta-Moxtgomeuy ArTEAU As this journal has been pretty well advertised under the fore going designation, it may interest some of our readers " on this side ot the line"" to Ik informed how it came to have so many lo culitieWa its place of publication. Hcing then what is now called a " relel " sheet, it left .Memphis on the morning of June r, 1S0"2, tliat pleasant little town having got into rather clos proximity to General Grant s heathpiarteiy, who was seeking to make the acquaintance of General Pcinlcrton at Al leville, the 'Afn-nt retinal to Jackson, the capital of Mississippi. Here it continued until the 14th of May. 1MJ3, when Generals Grant and Sherman ttnk it into their heads to "occupy" and -possess" that snug little city. Tliev thought thev were about to "bag" the Apjal, beyond any peradven ture, ami their scouts had furnished them with a copy of that morning' issue, fresh and damp trom the press but they didn't. As thev came in one war. the Ajoh-mI went out the other way, with full forty rounds of shot and shell making a pother over its head, lefore it could get out ot the way of those impatient military commanders. The Api'it then, after issuing small extras at Meridian, for about one week, east its lines in the pleasant place of Atlanta, think ing to Ik out of lHth Grant's and Shennaii's way. Hut here again, on the 20th of July, ISO 1. the last named gentleman whom we take to Ik? of very restless tcnipcramcnt-.gave unmistakeablc indications that he wanted Atlanta likewise, and so the Aitl retired to Montgomery, Ala., continuing, however, to issue extra slips from a pivof-press, until the evacuation. As General Somelxdys corps marched into town one side, the proof- press, and the few eases of type retained to operate it, w ent out on a dray on the other and so General Sherman and the At'ifal parted for gol. We iK-lieve he went off somewhere down in Georgia, and wc have since learned that he ami his men knocked printing offices into pi at a terrible rate, over in South Carolina. The Ajjtd resumed its regular publication at Montgomery on the UOth of SeptemlK-r, 1K04, and continued to entertain and instruct the denizens of "Dixie's land" until alKtut the 12th. of April, 180i, , m hen another licn e gentleman of the Fed eral military jersuasion took it into ins iieau to ride furiously down through Alabama. He gobbled up Sclma, using it very roughly, .burning foundries, gun factories, .and tilings generally of the "C. S," .brand of ' ownership. When it was definitely ascertained that this modern Assyrian w ith his cohorts of seven shooting Spencer riflemen had fixed liis voracious eye on Montgomery that is to say. alwut the 12th ot April 1805 the J; made: roomibr him ly -going to Colum bus, Ga. From this time forward, the story :briefly tohL ; Montgomery , was occupied without resistance, and Columbus captured by 3Iajor General Wilson, after a stout but ineffectual defence. The materials of the office; with the exception of, the press and a few case's that haiT been forwarded to Macon, 'were piled in the street, and destroyed .by order of Major General Wilson, who exacted of Colonel Dill, one of the proprietors who was tSipturcd with the capture of Columbus, a bond of one hundred thousand dollars not to publish the 47nf during the war, or in default to be held a prisoner.
