Every day's police and criminal reports indicate anew the great and terrible agency of liquor in the production of crime In the latest of our local horrors the murder of Senor Otero in Brooklyn the perpetrator of the'erime, (if w ni! that those un der arrest as the culprits are really such,) first plied their victim and then filled themselves with hot and strong liquor, as a nccesnary preliminary to the commission of the atrocity. And nine out of ten of the murders that di- nuc vm lULUiu urn i jr bid wiuuiikvu uuuu the same infernal influence. The same thinj; may be said of the lesser grades of criminal-. ity. In cases of violent assaults, the assail ants are nearlv always excited by liquor ; and in a large proportion of the personal outra ges on the streets and elsewhere, the victim or the penctrator is a victim of this unnat ural stimulus. It is one of the chief causes of domestic quarrels and difficulties one of the ' fundamental agencies of degradation and vide. Inffact, it would seem from our experiance, that, but for liquor and its unflu ences, the grosser forms of crime would, in great measure, cease to prevaiL The American people, of all classes, are altogether too much given to the use of strong liquors whiskey, brand, gin, etc. ; and perhaps they are also getting to use too extensively heavy beers and ales. Nothing is more conclusively demonstrated than that the excessive use ot strong alcoholic drinks is prejudicial to the health as well as the morals that it is ruinous to the physical or ganism of the nation as well as to its intel lectual organism. They are used mainly as producers of excitement, and that too chiefly by those who of all things ought to avoid this sort of excitement. And when we have evidence every day that they are the main source of crime, people ought to take warn ing as to how they touch them, and to whom they offer them. TO THE LOVERS OF THE FINE ARTS. CM.
