' It has already been announced that
the National Lnion Republican Com
tnittee will meet in Washington next
month to fix the time , and place, for
holding the convention of the party for
the bo ruination of candidates for I "resi
dent. It may not be amiss to state, in
Tiew of this fact, that, there have been
numerous . preference expressed by
prominent' persons from various sec
tions of the country in favor or the 4th
of July as the proper time, and for
l miadeipuia as pre-eminently tne most
desirable place for holding our conven
tion in 1876. That city will then be the
ueatre ot imponant events in com
memoration of the early history of the
country; and the atmosphere will be
redolent ! with tba spirit; of patiotism.
The MirouQdlngs.will be . favorable to
Sunty and progre-s toward the lurther
evelopment of the ! resources of the
country, and the Union fires will blase
with an wonted brightness. All the world
and his wife and family, so to speak,
will be present, and each and all sec
tions will be upon their propriety. A
suitable hall and other accommodations
can be obtained with but little addi
tional expense beyond what would be
involved in attendance upon the great
Exposition, independent of the conven
tion. The delegates would therefore be
enabled to "kill two birds with one
stone." ' These suggestions are thrown
out for the consideration of the mem
bers of the committee, as the embodi
ment of the feelings of thoso with
whom .we have conversed on the sub
ject. Republican.
Our attention has been called to the
following "paragraph!, which appeared
in tho "Bakersville: Independent," a
paper professing to be neutral in poli
tics. ?
"From the public press of the country
it seems to be the general impression
that the Democratic party has allied
itself with the whiskey party and Roman
Catholics, for the purjoc of increasing
its political strength. If this is so, we
advise every Iemoerat in the land to
wash hi hand of ajl connection with
an alliacce so base and so unprincipled.
Any man or party thai will speculate
on the blood and the curse
of a nation, and barter away the
peoples' dearest I" hopes lor ' the
sake of party domination, deserves and,
will nave the universal scorn and con
tempt of all houcst men. Shall we ex
pect a refutation of this shameful charge
from th Democratic tress? We shall
see."
Bishop Cummin aavs that the Re
formed Episcopal Church wa!organized
on thcBecond day of December, 1873,
without a single congregation adhering
to it. On the second day of December,
1875, it numbers fifty two clergymen
and fifty congregations throughout the
United states and the Dominion of
Canada.
