The following letter vaa received by
the Mayor of this city from the Savan

RESOI.TTIOX OF THANKS, TA3E;i) JAX
TAHY llTII, 1877.
When the people of this city i bowed,
trembling under their recent dreadful
calamity ; when thousands lied for
safety ; when industry was paralyzed
and cotnmeree suppressed ; when want,
pestilence and death joined in their
ghastly and .unsparing work ; when
tenderness failed to soothe and skill to
save ; when the strong grew weak and
the timid quailed ; when the bntve were
resigned and only the reckless defiant :
Then came citizens and strangers,
from far and near a nob'e band with
ready hands, and willing hearts, came
unsolicited, upon this scene of desola
tion pain and woe, proffering their de
voted service some sacrificing their
lives to the needy, the sick, the Pilfer
ing, and the dead.
Then, too, from the North, the East,
the Wist, rnd the .outli, even from
beyond Sea, came an inpouring of
bonefirtion, universal, and so lavish
that, leaving no room for want, religion
blesses and gratitude revere humanity
so supreme :
Thrrrforr-, ,V.' ;,'(., That the thanks
of this Association and of its members
individually, and irt the name of our
gratelul people be, and ihev are hereby
tendered toa!l those who, whether citi

A TVOMlKItFUL STORY OF TUB

An Immense Sea Monster Captures
and gwallows a Sperm Whale
Captain Drewar, of the bark Pauline,
of London, who has just arrived at
Cork Irom a long voyage, favors the
public with the following account of
an ocean marvel:
Bark Panline, July S, 1S75, latitude
5 deg. 13 min. North, longitude 35
deg. Wesl, Cape San Koquc, northeast
coast of Brazil, distance twenty miles,
at 11 a. m., the xeather fine and clear,
wind and sea moderate, observed some
black spots on the water, and a whitish,
pillar some thirty feet high above them.
At the first sight I took all to be break
ers, as the sea was splashing up fountain-like
above them, and the pillar a
pinnacle rock, bleached with the sun,
but the pillar fell with a? splash and a
similar one rose. They rose and fell
alternately io quick succession, and
good glasses showed me it was a mon
ster sea serpent coiled twice round a
large sperm whale. The; Head and tail
part, each about thirty feet long, were
acting as levers, twisting itself and its
victim round with great velocity. They
sank out of sight every two minutes,
coming to the surface still revolving;
and the struggles of the whale and two
other whales that were! near, frantic
with' excitement, made the sea in their
vicinity like a boiling caldron; and a
loud, confused noise was distinctly
heard. This strange occurrence lasted
some li.teeu niiuute. an 1 liuisbed with
the tail portiou cf I lit i whale being
elevated straight in the air, then wav
ing backward and forwird, and lashing
the water furiously in t)o- last death
struggle, when the whole body elisap-
ps-ared fr:m our vie w. going down head
foronio: t" i lie bottom, where no doubt
it was gorged at t..e m. rpr tit's leisure;
and that ni' list. r o.' monsters may
have . k. n mauy mouths in a state of
coma, digesting the hiige mouthful.
Tlii-n two ol the largii.U sperm whales
that I have ever seen 'moved slowly
the! ce toward the vesscJ, their bodies
'ii ir thin tiiual.y i ievated out of the
water, and i.ot pouting ot miking the
h ast noise, but seeming quite paralyzed
with fear; indeed, a cold shiver went
through my own frame beholding
the last agonizing slrugg e of the oor
whale that had teemed as helpless in
the coils of the vicious . monster aa a
bird in the talons of a hawk. AiUwing
for two coils round the wiiah-, I think
the serpent was about HJO or 170 feet
long, and 7 or 8 feet iagirui. It was
in color much like a conger eel ; and
the head, irom tho mouth in ing always
open, appeared the largest part of its
body, il is curious that ihe wha:e,
that lives on the smallest .'o il of any
fish in the ocean, shotil i i s.-it be but a
meal for another, monster ; lor I think
it as feasible that the serpe i' swallow
en I the whale us that the b a con-tric-tor
can consume a whole tiu'.'i k.
I wrote thus fsr little thii.knig I
would ever s-re the ere'iit flgiin ; but
at 7 a.m. July Pi, fu l tie same latitude
and eighty miles Kst ot San lvoque, I
was astonisded to see the name or a
? unilar monster. It wa ih-owinr its
head and about forty feet of its body
in a horizontal position out of the water
as it passed onward by the stern ..four
vessel. I began musing why we were

visitor, and concluded thai 'In hind of;
white paint, two feet wiie nb ive the1

attention. It wa i-ut on to k-! the
