If recent intelligence ixom me unncu States may be believed, British suprem acy in the coostrocnpij.of iron vessels appear now id be aexioualy threatened by Americaa eonipetltien. It is afBrm ed by the transatlantic press that ' the iron ahipbaiklers of Pennsylvania and Delaware are, at this moment, building better and cheaper ships, Uhan can be produced oq the Clyde -. and if that assertion can be substantiated an in dustry ln- vhich wo have been accus tomed to regard ourselves Bs unravalled. is. unquestionably, plaeed in grave jeopardy. Iron ship-building is, as yet comparatively in its infancy in America. Nevertheless, the annual aggregate of iron vessels now built in the United States is over thirty, representing a total value of fronr $12,000,000 to ?lo, 000,000, and the business rapidly in creases. Five veers ago England un doubtedly poi-sessed, in respect to raw material and labor, advantages which America coulJ not pretend to acquire. Bat the marvellous skill of the people of the United States in inventing labor saving machinery now places them in a position more favorable than that which we enjoy as regards this particu lar branch of industry. They have mills for rolling iron plates furnaces aud various kinds of cthcicnt machinery of American invention in their build ing yards, and the price of pig iron has beeu so reduced duriag the last few years, that upon a three-thousand -ton ship there is now a saving to Americans of 2,000 in the manufacture of iron alone. So rapid has been the develop ment ot iron manufacture i n the l uited States that, to-day, iron is as cheap there aa in any other country. A leau ior element of expense in building a ship is labor, which constitutes about sexty per cent, of her entire coat. This has been cheapened ia the States by. the introduction of many labor-saving ap pliances not to , be met with in Eng land ; besides, the price of manual labor has, of late, been almost bruug in to a level in both countries. The cost of copper has so declined in America that the States have not only almost ceased to purchase that metal, hut aro able to export it. The facilities of America for obtaining timber are known to be immensely superior to those posseased by England. The average price of iron sailing ships in the Clyde is said to be fid 10s to Xli per ton, aud one of the largest Ameri can iron shipbuilders has announced that he is prepared, within the present iron vessels, and deliver them In au English port, at a considerably lower price than that, provided he is allowed to convey cargo on them. He will also undertake to guarantee that they shall receive from Engltnd and Ameri can underwriters the highest class." Considering in how many wars America has already encroached upon our man ufactures, and excluded us from her own and other markets, the facts we have stated are not calculated to en liven the outlook of the shipbuilders on the Clyde, the Tyne, and the Thames IjOndon JMifi Tdegravh. mw Hampshire and !he Sontborn Pacific . The Hew Hampshire .Legislature re cently passed some resolutions declar ioc against the "subsidy system in th? interest of internal improvement." Such a resolution afforded the politi cian of that State a very cheap means of gaining a reputation for economy. But a public policy which has been so long established and which has been so beneficial to the commercial inter ests of the nation, ought not to be set -aside at the request of a State which does net happen to have i any interest in great enterprises which now claim the aid of Congers-. By the present time the Russian forco on the south bank of the Danube has been probably increased to a sufficient number to make their lodgment .reason ably secure.
