Daring the past week there hare been attempts made to burn three different places. The first place, the Wilmington Star office, the second, the residence of ,ex-Mayor Canaday, the third, that of Cornelius Jackson. We give 1 "dow the account of the outrageous transactions taken from our worthy city cotemporary, the ff(tr. We will give a reward of $o0 00 for evidence that will convict the villain who entered our press-room and tarn' pered with our engine some time be tween Sunday and Monday morning. "The work of the scoundrel indicates that he undersood bis business," knii il was of such a character that it might havo resulted in a serious disaster if our engineer had not been a sober, care ful uiau. We are sorry to know that so dastard ly a wretch as the perpetrator of this outrage resides in Wilmington.- The act was wicked and devilish beyond description, and shows that we cannot be too watchful in the protection, of our properly. The residence of ex-Mayor Canaday, corner of Market and Seventeenth streets, narrowly escaped being the scene of a destructive conflagration Tutesday morning, about 1 o'clock. Since his late illness, his family being absent from the city, Mr. Canaday has required his waiting man, West to tsluep in a room adjoining his own chamber, vith tho door between the two roms left open, in order that West could be called without difficulty in case his services shonld be needed during the night. At the hour speci fied Mr. Canaday was aroused from his slumbers byjAVest who bad rushed into his room with the cry that the house; was on fire. Mr. C. sprang from his bed, when he found that the room was tilled with smoke. West seized a lamp which was burning in the dress ing room adjoining, and the two hur ried as fast as they possibly could down the stairs, the moko being so tlcnsc that they could only find their way by tin- sense of feeling and their familiarity with the premises, while' it was so stifling that they could with "K-'-'V ant t.l.lJ. . Allliluf, at the foot of the stairs they opeucdj the door of the first room they came to, w hich was that of the parlor, but could di-cover no trace of fire ;n that, and they nest repaired to the sitting room, the door of which was opcu. Here they encountered a cloud of smoke still more dense than that they had assed throngh, but were enabled to sec their way by a glare of light which peuetrtted the smoke from a closet or rushed oat into the street in their night clothing. Mf. Jackson has no doubt that the fire was the work of an incendiary, as unmistakable evidences of this fact were discovered by those who were first to arrive on the ground, the fire having been started under the portion of the building immediately beneath where the kerosene barrel stood. The floor at that point was thoroughly I saturated with the inflamable material, which caused the flames to take hold more readily and spread with greater rapidi ty than they would have otherwise done The building was insured for $2o0, and I bo stock for f3tv, In the IFonie Insusance Company of New York, rep resented in this city by Mr. Norwood Giles. The loss over and above the in surance was about $oo0 to $400, which falls quite heavily upou Mr. J., who is a very worthy and industrious gentle man, and was but just recovering" from loses sustained by au incendiary fire at the same place some five or six mouths take pleasure in cup-board in the corner of the room.
