fcpUSSing
I. United 1 States Senator.
The various State journals have been dis-
for soma time past the subject of
'ho shall sitiin the. Senate of the United
tatea. The Post has remained silent, and
believing that the windy war of opposing
andidatcs would soon expend itself as in-
eed it has we flow quietly sucrcest to the
Legislature that there are some interests
J outside of mere arty patronage i;i the po
- sition 1of Unijtedi States - Senator. As has
fceen acknowledged' by every fair minded
I citizen of the State, Hon. Joseph C. Abbott
'.lias honestly sought the public good indus
, triously and ably At all times he has been
, . found, in his i seat in the Senate, and ap-
proacliable on all occasions; He has en
f lavored to obtain from his old associates
ow high in power- those favors, no mere
politician could pbtain for a State politically
sane person can believe any other
tnau-jiintpe Senate could have obtain
ert a tithe -of the favors extended North
Carolina bv the present administration. H
' inist W stupid! beyond hopcf ot redemption

that many of the opposition are at last re
turning to reason nd wiil, we hope use all
possible influence on conservative represen

Abbott. 1 As tlb htnan to benefit the State
we' advocate his return, and-, from the fact

The Musical Conimcdlenes, the

the reputed miscegenationlst Martin) in
full Radical regalia, regularly perfurmed.
Do tclifUs if it is true. We hope not."
Now, when it is remembered that we
publicly proclaimed at Wilmington how we
voted, and afterwards published a state
ment in regard to our action, all of which
Gen j Hill knew, are we nbtkliistified in pro
nouncing his conduct mean in admitting an
ariicie inio nis paper j caicuiacea to maxe a
false impression ? -The writer of.tho article
knew that we voted for i thejnew. Board of
Directors (Mr. Martin among the number)
for the purpose of throwing out the bid set.
We publicly proclaimed our j purpose to do
so. Mr. Martin, the. new President, is as
decent and honest a' man as Gen. Hill or
his anonymous scribbler, and ' the new Di
rectors (such men as ! John L. Brown of
Charlotte, W. H. Michal of lihcblnton,' T.
P. Wells of Shelby, Thosi S.Ashe ofWades
boro, H. M. Houston of Monroe, and Kidder,
Kerchner and Cronly ot j Wilmington.) are
as good men as any of their; predecessors
and far better than some of tbem. . They,
will never take advantage of their positions
to make money off the KOad. , ,
We know, that the people generally inter
ested in the Road, and ! especially the busi
ness men ot onelby, liincolnton. Charlotte.
Monroe and -Wilminstoii'j are delighted that
a new'Board of Directors were clecjed. , We
are proud to say that we aided to a consid
erable-extent in the good work. and il any
one is displeased with Qur course ' they may
belp themselves the best they $an.
It ill becomes any one who iserved under
Dr; Sloan's administration to! talk about
Mr. Martin's being a radical. Politics have
nothing to do' with the matter under con
sideration, and we have made Ino attack on-
Dr. Sloan nor on the State Directors, tor we
Deneve tneir aaministration nas i been as
good as any preceding one none have done
much towards building ; the Road since the
close of the war but our "icdmplaint is
against Gen. Hill for publishing-an article.
in which our name is used in a manner cal
jculated to injure us with; those! who are not
familiar with the facts and circumstances
We stated in the Democrat last week that
we favored a combination of the votes of
Cleaveland, Mecklenburg andiUnion coun
ties with the vote of ,the City of Wilming
ton to secure an entire new Board of Direc
tors. There was no secret or underhanded
work about it. The Agents bf the three
counties named had a right, land it was
their duty, to do what they thought best
for the interests of 4.heir respective counties.
It was well understood that the: Road could
not be built by those who havjs heretofore,
controlled , it all admitted that and ft.
was important to put it into the hands ot
tor.
