During tne year the num bef of gas lamps has been increased to 138, being an addition of 19 to the number over last year. The amount is small compared with the benefits. This expense is unavoidable so long as crime and disorder exist. The cost of this department compared with the previous year is, , 1870. 1871. ; - l $958 06. $1,186 82. Increase is $228 76. 10. Pristiko. This department is debited with all cost of printing, advertis ing,; etationary, blank books, check books, tax books, and everything appertaining to the outfit in that line necessary for business in the several city offices. The cost of this department last year was charged under the head of "Miscel laneous,", and was in - 1870. 1871. $2,747 65. Decrease is $846 08. $1,901 67. 11. Miscellaneous. The amount to debit of this account represents expenses not properly chargeable to any of the other divisions. The item3 are given in full in the general account published herewith UNDER THE HEADING OF "EXTRAORDINAUT EXPENSES," ARE THESE ITEMS, VIX: Citt Election. This charge is the por tion of the cost paid alter the beginning ot the ''fiscal year, in accordance with an Act ot the General Assembly at its session in 1870. The amount of cost of the election was $1,008 45, most of which might have been saved had the election been held in accordance with previous law. Construction. This department is deb ited With the purchase of steam fire engine 'Cape Fear," horsts, equipment, and altera tion in the Cap e Fear engine house and the "HowarcJ Iteliet ' engine company's heuse Tue debit to this account is $6,523 55. Sanitary Purposes. The amounts deb ited to this account was paid for disin- ! fecting the city, draining and keeping up rigid quarantine against the introduction of yellow fs-ver from Charleston, S. C. Hap pily our city escaped. There is no doubt the. precaution taken prevented a terrible epidemic. The long warm autumn gave great cause to fear the introduction of the fever.: We were fortunate to escape the scourge wlrch visited our si star city. Loaji Account.
