Silas Nm Martonlor Mavor The time is at hand when the voters of Wilmington will have the high privilege of agaiu ueciaing wno snail nil ior tne ensuing year, the ; important position of Mayor of the city. It is not only desirable, but almost indispensable to the interests of Wil mington that tlie decision should rest, not so much on party grounds as upon those 1 qualmcations and .principles of action which will moat contribute to the best good of the city and to the welfare of all parties, colors, classes and conditions. I know of no gentleman who comes up to ; the proper standard so well, and who so fully combines in his own clear and able head and in his own enlarged, true and patriotic heart so well the necessary qualifi cations as Mayor Martin. His proverbial devotion to all our material interests, his comprehensive and statesmanlike news of public "policy, his unimpaired and unim peachable integrity in all his public acts', united to an acknowledged and far-reaching skill in matters of finance, pre-eminently fit him, not only ior Mayor, nor yet alone for President of our chief railroads, but for still higher offices . yet in store fqr this strong-headed and large-hearted iTorth Carolinian. The financial interests of Wilf mington appeal trumpet-tongued to all her good citizens, to bo most careful and judi cious in their next election of Mayor. This is emphatically, the time when we should select a man, not so much because he is a true Republican as Mayor Martin is known to be but because of his happy faculty and fortunate influence in a financial point of view in engineering schemes necessary for the safety, prosperity, and goad name fc home and ..abroad of our city. . This, dis tinguished 'citizen has done much, tery, much already for the city, the whole Cape Fear section, and the entire State; and it his life is spared, is destined, with his great enterprise and superior qualifications of head and heart to do vastly more for all, if he can be kept in public. . Let us all, then, .insist strongly upon his re-acceptance ot the ofhec of Major. Let not the prejudice ofjparty politics obscure .from vision and correct appreciation ' hi3 marked and most useful devotion to. the cause of popular education, his great interest in internal im provements, and his able services in behalf of North Carolina. Editor Post : v Deak Sir: We believe - in bestowing honor where honor is due, and take great pleasure in recommending to the Republi can State Convention, the rcnomination of that unswerving Republican and faithful public officer, the Hon. During the war he did good service in defence of Union prin cipks in the borders of North Carolina. At its close he was one of the few outspok- en, icariess men wno rendered great assist; ancein organizing the Republican party in this State.
