I'ursuant to political notice a large number'of the leading citizens of Pen der 'county-- afjsembifd at the Court louse on the 27th of December, 1876. TJie object w;?s to take action on coun ty government under the Amendments. Thomas "Williams, Esq., was elected chairman and Messrs! J. II. Blood worth and Thomas H. The honorable victory! luus won by the Democratic party must not be allowec to waste itself away in mere rejoicings, and to turn, as it were to ashes on tin lips. The thanks or the meeting were ten dered our late Board of ,Coimty Com missioners for their faithfnl and effi cient services in the cause of county economy, retrenchment', : n 1 reform. Splrite4 speeches were made in sup port of the resolutions. Messrs. Edwin and John Kerr, of Sampson county, responded to calls made upon them quite eloquently, .The meeting was in every respect satisfactory, and show that the fires of Reform are brightly burning in our Eastern counties. i GENERAL CITY M-Urt. County Commissioners. The Board of County Commissioners met yesterday at 4 o'clock p. m., pres ent John, 0. Wagner, Chairman, and commissioners 8. YanAmringe, I). Nixon and I). Holmes. , The- following communication was received: "To.the Board of County Commis iipnzrs of New Hanovtr Gouniy Gnyhtvtn: I hereby tender my resig nation aa a member of the B'oard of County ' Commissioners, and suggest he name of B. G. Wrrth as my successor- S. VaxAmrixok." The Board then went into 'an. elec tion to ffll.the vacancy and M. r. B. C. Worth was unanimously elected. Capt. I. B. Grainger and Mr. B. G. We thought the old sailors' tavern recently torn doirn on Front street de rived its name from having been built in 1776. An old resident tells ns that it was begun in 1613 and finished in 1819. Its builder, Mr. Cazaux, named it the Concord CofTec Houc, and after wards flndiug the situation did not suit his business, gold it to another party who used it as a sxilors boarding house, calling it the Mechanics' Hotel. Why it ij known to the present gener ation -Old -W we are unable to discover. La. Fayette's hanquej was spread in its dining hall because it was the largest in Wilmington. Watch Bilght. There will be a union of Fifth .Street and Front Street Churches in a watch night to bo held at Front Street Church Sunday night, commencing at 9:30 o'clock. A Methodist oastor says it has been perhaps twenty years ! since one ot these primitive Methodist meetings has been observed by these Churches. Thermometrlcal. The state of the thermometer at the various stations named below was ol served at the 6ignal office in this city, it 4:31 p. m.: Augusta, 32; Charleston, 48: Galves ton.33; Jacksonville. 55; Mobile, 36; New Orleans, 40; Norfolk, 42; Savan nah, 45: Wilmington. 51. The Weather. About dusk yesterday afternoon it suddenly turned cold. A, high wind sprang up, which continued through the night, blowing "great guns" and howl.'ng like a storm at sea.
