THE .WILMINGTON :DiSPATGHECTEMBER1? 1910. r-1 1 4. KEEPING PRESIDENT KENLY ISSUES LETTER TO TRAINMEN (Continued from page one.) Norfolk Southern Official Has Toothing to Say Craven Democrats Busy (Special to The -Dispatch.) New Bern, Sept. 1. "I have noth . ing whatsoever to say in regard to the situation," said Col. S. H. Leard. general passenger agent of tne Nor folk Southern Railway Company, who spent a short while in the city last evening en route to Morehead CityT . where he went to attend to some. .'business in connection with the troops now . encamped at Camp Glenn. , Colonel LeaTd was asked whether he thought the railway men would walk out Monday morning as planned and if they did so, whether the Nor folk Southern would be greatly incon venienced. However, he absolutely declined to discuss the matter. Captain Matt Manly, treasurer for the company, was also in the city lant evening and refused to discuss the matter, stating that he was not thoroughly familiar with the situation and would not like to give out any thing for publication. The farmers of the Dover section of ,the county will gather on Friday to attend the annual picnic given by the Dover Farmers' Union and the- occasion is to be made a great Dem ocratic rally and hundreds of Demo crats will be in attendance at the event. Mr. D. E. Henderson, secretary of "the Craven county Democratic execu tive committee, will be on hand to deliver the principal address for the occasion and be has prepared a pow erful plea for Democracy and this will doubtless prove of real interest. As the time for election approaches the Democratic voters of Craven county are lining up, getting In readi ness for the fight, and every public event that is for the good of the party is largely attended and much enthu siasm is shown. Mr. Henderson has arranged ,to have speeches made at a number of points in the county within the 'courses of the next few weeks and a com plete itinerary of the speakers will be published soon. Members of the North Carolina Na tional Guard, coming to New Bern from Camp Glenn, bring the story of the company, and will, accordingly. surrender all rights; and privileges that have Accrued to them (as em nloves. including any claim they5 mav have to pension, under the com pany's Yules. A conv of this letter is sent tti each employee of the company in train service departments. It is my sincere hope that there will be many who will continue in the service. ,To those remaining I express in advance the appreciation of the company and the assurance that your loyalty will not be forgotten. Yours very truly, (Signed) J. R. KENLY, President. As another preparedness measure a bulletin was issued from the office of Mr. T. C. White, general passen ger agent of the Atlantic Coast Line, ! Bowel Complaint 9 l-lt-J - ' Union County Health Campaign. The anti-typhoid campaign in Un ion county closed on August 26. Doc tor Carstarphen, of Wake Forest Col lege, who conducted the campaign for the State Board of Health, reports that the intelligent enthusiasm of the Un ion county people in seeking protec tion against typhoid fever was particu larly encouraging. Indeed, the en thusiasm ran so high that the local doctors in every section of the county were pressed into service and they rendered this service with such a splendid spirit of interest that their co-operation in this campaign places Union county n the foremost rank fit progressive counties in the propaganda of preventive medicine. Nearly 9,000 1 people of Union county presented themselves at the dispensaries for vac cination. Many others, of whom there is no record, were vaccinated by their local physicians, thus running the total number vaccinated to a much larger number. The enthusjasm concerning, health matters was not confined to typhoid prevention alone. During the fdur weeks in which this campaign was conducted, Doctor Carstarphen was besieged by requests from different parts of the county to lecture on various health topics . The deepest interest seemed to be how to prevent malaria, as well as typhoid. Very earnest inquiry, was made as to thej best method of conducting health in-1 struction in the public schools.
