Journal of yes- terday had the following editorial on that city's new health officer, Dr. John Thames, of this city, under , the ' heading, "Our New Health Officer:' "Dr. John Thames should have smooth sailing in Winston-Salem. The way has been well paved for him. -""Most any man who is reasonably well fitted for the work should find it easy to follow Dr. Kinyoun. For Dr. 'Kinyoun has laid the foundation of an efficient Health Department .deep and solid in this community. Winston-Salem will, never be without a whole-time. Health Officer, and as the months and years come and go his work will grow easier. For most of., us have now learned something of what it takes to make and maintain a Health Department worthy of the name. It has taken Dr. Kinyoun on ly a few months to teach us that much. "We haver learned that adequate equipment and force are necessary to enable the Health Officer to ac-, complish anything worth while. To some of us the lesson was not . a pleasant one, but we have learned it just, the same. Never again in this 1 1 community will . responsible men j throw up their hands in holy horror jS when the city authorities talk about spending a few hundred or a few, 3 thousand dollars more or less on the DronTotion of the public health. For! the hard-headed Winston-Salem business men of ; EE have found out that 1 3 the one best investment the city can make is an investment in the lives and health of. its people. In other : s words, most of us have learned that s J. I, mrJ lu imLuvututo uuuu jnal returns to keep the city clean and make and maintain for it a re putation of being a healthful place to live in. "Yes, any man should find it easy to carry on the work which Dr. Kin youn must turn over to other han4s the firstor October. For it is now assured that he will take up his dut-" ies with the almost solid co-operation of the people of Winston-Salem. We are certain that Dr. Thames will find his task here a pleasant one. For' he is in every way well equipped for the position. He has had many years experience. r His efforts as Health Officer in other communities ' have been crowned with success. This is especially true of his work in Wil mington and New Hanover county, where he is now located. it would, mqeed, nave been very ; difficult for Winston-Salem to have found a man who, in our judgment, is better fitted than is Dr. Thames; for the job that awaits him here. He' will come to this city with no new ! or pet theories of his own, but, likej Dr. Kinyoun, he will put those theor-j ies . into effect here which have long since been approved both by science; and practical experience in other! cities." TWO AUTO ACCIDENTS Two Machines Were Badly Damaged Today, But Occupants Unhurt. The desire to demonstrate how dexterously he could handle a car caused Henry Clemmons, colored, to run into a telephone post at Sixth and Red Cross streets and do considerable damage to the car he was driving. The telephone post that was struck was torn down'aifiTthe live wires were left dangling in the street. The negro works at Fennell's garage. He" stated that as he intended to turn into Sixth street from Red Cross that he noticed a Ford car standing in the center of the street and to protect the occupants of . the smaller machine he ra.n into the pole. The negro was driv ing an Overland car. He was taken into custody by the police and was charged with exceeding the speed limit as a number of the onlookers stated that he was' going fully 40 miles an hour. Just preceeding this accident a Prin cess street car ran into the automobile of-Mr. B. R, Felton when he endeav ored to cross Princess street at Sixth. No damage was done to either Mr. Felton or to the other passengers in the car, but the automobile was badly tern up. It was stated that the Prin cess street car was in charge of an . in experienced motorman. DECREASE SHOWN . . TODAY BY PLAGUE (By Associated Press.) vrTTew York, Sept. 13.
