His crime was that he had refused to turn over to the Germans the sum of 400 million francs, $80,000,000 in his charge in exchange for German paper. Immediately after his arrest he was packed off to an unknown destination in Germany, and von Bissing's gov ernment appointed Herr Buschweiier, a-German who for . many years had lived in Belgium, to be his successor. Ilerr Bnchswoiler. although still a German subject, had;learned to love his new country, and ho was general ly respected even in these turbulent times. He had no sooner been ap pointed manager of the National Bank Mrs. -Alderman, was in her 65th year and was held in - the highest of esteem by all (who knew. - her.
