C, the guest of relatives. :o: The "Tea and Topics Club" held a delightful meeting Wednesday after noon with Miss Mary Gorham, at her Rome on Green street. After the business part of the meeting was fin ished delicious refreshments were served. Miss Louise Huske was married to Er. William S. Jordan Thursday evening at St. John's church. The Children's Chapter, Daughters of the Confeder acy held a very interesting and in structive meeting at, the home of Mr and Mrs. R. H. Best; on last Friday afternoon, when their daughter. Lois. was hostess to the ? chapter; The guests were entertained on the spa cious veranda, which was attractive ly arranged for the- occasion, vases or scarlet salvia forming the floral decorations. In addition to the month-' ly historical pTOj've'vnioy able supplementary program was pre pared by the program Committee. This consisted of a chorus by the chapter, a vocal duet by Misses Eve lyn Anderson and Martha Best, a splendid written paper "by Miss Mar tha Gresham, giving the war record of her grandfather, : Capt. g. A: John son; a quartette by Misses Cora Hol land, Julia Ricks, Annie Lee Arkins. and Elizabeth 'Anderso'n, a-'paper by Miss Evelyn Anderson. Miss Fannie Monroe was pianist. Joseph Calliaux. Vichy, Oct. 21. The former French Premier and Finance Minister Jo seph Calliaux and his wife, who four years ago shot the "Fisaro" editor, Calmettebut was acquitted at her trial, were nearly lynched when they arrived at this famous watering places At the outbreak of the war Calliaux was permitted to enter the army as a paymaster, although he had been accused of treasonable dealings with Germany by Calmette and others. His appointment caused a storm of in dignation and he was forced to resign after a short time. Later it was re ported that he had gone to South America. A few days ago the once powerful politician and his wife came to Vichy urider an assumed name. . Nobody surmisad their identity until they were recognized on the street by the son and a brother-in-law of Cal mette. ' When young Calmette shouted: "Thsre is Caillaux, the traitor" the couple was surrounded by a howling mob and attacked furiously. Two crippled soldiers beat the ex-minister with crutches until he was rescued by a couple of policemen. In the mea ntime his wife, whose clothes had been torn to shreds by the mob, fell into a faint.
