ATTEMPTED FORGERY AND DEADLY ASSAULT. (Special to The Dispatch.) Hamlet, ApriT 13. Yesterday at noon in front of the First National Bank, of Hamlet, a sensation occurred when Mr. Noah-H. Jenerette, cashier of the bank, shot a bold, bad negro in the heel, wha had just advanced on him with an open pocket knife. The negro had just left the bank, where he had tried to procure funds with a forged check, and when demanded by Mr. Jenerette to surrender he mads the assault. The darky jumped sev eral feet high when the bullet hit him, and an additional bullet which was sent whizzing by the'rast fleeing man caused him to increase his speed to a Remarkable degree. In an hour or two the officers caught the fugi tive, after chasing him some dis tance and through several swamps. ' burg line southeast of Arras has been taken, as shown by last mgnts ont cial communication giving a total width of three and, one-half' miles to the turning movement at the top. of j this famous position. in falling back the, Germans .?t are making in the . direction of an emer-. cr0Tirv niiYiliarv line to the rear of bv"vV , . the Hindenburg line, called the Dro- court-Queant line. Work, on this po sition is far from complete and the Germans seem to have had no idea of using it except as a last resort. They are now fighting under orders to de lay the British advance at every pos sible point to permit -completion of the work of making the new position defendable. On retiring from the Spmme last l month the Germans aparently expect-! ed to hold all the Hindenburg line , running southeast from Arras in front of Cambrai and through St. Quentint and Laon. The important point at the northern end of this line was Vimy ridge. There is -no doubt the1 Germans never expected to be driven; off that ridge by a frontal attack, as- was done by the Canadians on Mon day. ' I Anticipating a northern offensive. however, the possible outflanking oi the Vimy positions, . the Drocourt Queant switch running north from the Hindenburg line, was planned. In the meantime the Germans, driv-ett-back from their old positidns, were endeavoring to dig themselves in at various places, especially in front off Monchy-Le-Preux, in which process they suffered heavy casualties from j artillery and machine gun fire. j FQR It is rather difficult to explain the exact situation where the attacks center on arbitrary German field posi tions rather than on towns or vil lages. But in modern warfare, the taking of a bit of trench or a strong point marked only on war maps may be of far greater importance and sig nificance than the capture of a city. ca Jam : B. ?
